I'll summarize, but it loses something if you don't have the quotes with it...

Jerry told their B-3 tech - Peter Miller - he didn't want the B-3 onstage because he was supersticious of losing another keyboard player;

Miller and Bralove then spent "weeks/months" putting together a rig with three primitive B-3 modules (Voce DMI-64's) and a GT Trio for some distortion to provide as close a sound to the original B-3 as possible without having an actual B-3 console onstage;

per Vince, Bralove had complete control of the MIDI sounds he was feeding Vince, with some sign language from Bralove to Vince suggesting what he might throw at him next, but the stack of sounds was completely controlled by Bralove.

That's how I understand it. Garcia did not want to look across the stage and see a big B3 sitting there. Superstition and being haunted by it's presence.
Granted Vince got paid handsomely, but talk about not being given a fighting chance. How many of us would want to be in a setting where somebody else was dictating gear/tone etc?

Yeah, I've always felt bad for Vince in that regard. Not only was he not Brent, he was also not Bruce and he got stuck with the band in a serious state of decline and didn't even get control over his own sound or gear. Not really a fair shake in life.

Then again if he never joined the Dead we'd all just remember him, or more likely not remember him as the guy from the Tubes.

I see. Thanks for posting that info Chuckles---I never knew that's why there was no B-3. And, I agree---what a totally F'd up deal for Vince. He musta been paid very well to go along with that whole set-up. IMHO, that's pretty screwed up.

it's a wonder jerry never go superstitious about those black shirts? right? someone, I think it might be branford m, worte that they were in her bedroom and the walk in closet was empty but for hanger after hanger of those black shirts.. but i digress..

so, anyone know if that was the dark star b-3?

I'm not sure about that, but I think I remember a friend of mine who actually dated Scott for a while telling me that they did somehow procur Brent's B-3 and that he was using it..... I would make sense given that apparently there was no more need for it in the GD.
Maybe other people who see them more often would know if Rob Barroco does in fact play on it.

As for the whole reason to rid the GD of it (Jerry's apparent superstiusness) it did surprise me that Jerry would feel so strongly about it---I mean, I don't think it was the Hammond that killed their keyboardists....and, ain't nothing gonna sound any better.

I'm not 100% on this, but I do believe our boy Vince actually had a brief appearance in the the Olivia Newton John flick "Xanadu" back in '80 or '81. The Tubes and ELO have musical contributions.

Phil's book definitely talks about Jerry's huge walk-in closet with nothing but 5 black t-shirts in it. One of my favorite parts.

Do you know if DSO did in fact have it for a time?

My cousin was a stage manager for the fox in boulder, and he told me that DSO does use brent's organ. He put it on the stage. Not sure if it is all the time, but they did a few years ago.
