Every once in a while somoeone will make some cockamamie statment about how Jerry's tone is really all about his style and fingers. This is the second video I've seen with Jerry playing someone else's equipment (the other time was with some Latin actor). In both cases he sounds like absolute crap.

This should be proof positive that his tone wasn't just about style and fingers. He actually does play with relatively the same style he normally does - but those quirky mishits he sometimes has dont' sound good on this setup - they sound like mistakes.

Are you talking about when he is with Rueben Blades?

He is playing Tiger there, and it is a pretty cool jam

Kind of funny. This is a good example of how Garcia can sound like Garcia on any rig. The vibrato at 1:46, the little off tempo thing at 2:15. And his run at 3:12, that's sounds like something from New Potato Caboose from 68'. He obviously still remembers how to dial in some tone on a Les Paul and very quickly gets to something warm and gritty at the same time.

Just call me cockamamie but I think Jerry knows how to handle a Gold Top....

I think that's the one. Not saying Jerry played badly, just think the rig sounds really bad. I guess when we say 'sounds like' Jerry there are two aspects:
Sounds like Jerry = I can tell by the style that's him (the same way SRV is unmistakable)
Sounds like Jerry = That rig sounds an awful lot like Tiger going through a Twin and a Mac into JBLs

I do think the Jam with Reuben is very interesting, just don't think the rig sounds anything like his normal setup. And my opinion is it sounds worse.

I'm of the same cockamamie "tone" opinion. This rig/fx/guitar stuff is all peripheral, like the cherry on the sundae; secondary to technique and tertiary to spirit and feel.

I found that picture on Facebook believe it or not. No, those are both Ampegs over against the wall. Looks like a Ampeg Gemini to the right.

It is a great shot. I was pretty jazzed when I stumbled across it.

The video of this 'This Land is Your Land' with Los Lobos is actually from a primetime news broadcast. I have it on an old VHS tape somewhere. That could go in the thread about unusual occuances of hearing the Dead. And that is why I bothered to jump up and throw a tape in when I heard the lead up to the story!

True proof JG was JG on any guitar, rig, banjo ect. Really great stuff..I love the ending, seems like he's resisting the urge to point the right pointer in the air before the end. I just love it!

David grisman quoted jerry as the only guy he ever heard who you could instantly tell who he was ( whether it was acoustic/classical guitar/electric/banjo ect) Pretty cool to be that talented really. Alot ppl sound alot different on other instruments IMHo

Amazing how the same example can "prove" one thing (Jerry doesn't sound like Jerry because he isn't playing his regular rig) to some people and the opposite thing (Jerry is just Jerry, no matter what he's playing) for another group of people .

I once saw Garcia play with Los Lobos on television. They played Cream Puff War.

I'd love to find a version of that. I believe it was in the 1980's.
