Kinda interesting to hear him flip through approx 4-5 pickup-select & tone-knob settings during his solo.
Sounds like some pre-amp overdrive bite to his tone throughout as well, vs. pure-clean.

This might be from fall '86. Jerry's first time onstage after his coma was with Los Lobos. Scully's book Living With The Dead has a pic of Jerry with the Les Paul.

And fwiw, imo Jerry always had preamp bite/warmth in his tone, up until 1993 when it went ultra-clean (and horrible-sounding)... which (as we all should know by now) had nothing at all to do with the Cripe guitar.

i think this vid is definitely 89, if you look at footage from summer 89 (downhill from here, truckin up to buffallo or anything on youtube) jerry looks exactly the same: black t shirt, pony tail. ive only ever seen him rock a pony tail like that in 89 footage

ohhhhhh yeah that black T-shirt definitely narrows the date down to somewhere between 1970-1995 = )

But yeah I should have watched more than 10 seconds of the vid I guess to see the ponytail. That does place it in 88-89. However there is a 1986 pic of him borrowing one of David Hidalgo's Les Pauls (same one?). And fwiw, the 10 seconds I did watch? Sounds just like Jerry to me. What kinda amp is he playing through? That might be a bigger tonal difference than the guitar.

I thought his overdrive was more akin to Live Dead era, tonally... More overdrive bordering on feedback than edge/warmth.
I just assumed it was a Twin Reverb amp.
It doesn't strike me as a particularly strong outing for Jer on this day. Kinda neither here nor there.
Probably more likely a poor choice of medley for LL (vocally for sure) than a Jerry thing.

Looks like he had some trouble dialing in the tone he was after. As far as the guitar being a piece of shit, I am not sure what kind of les paul that was but I have always loved them.

My #1 right now is a Warren Haynes 58 reissue. But I did just pick up a bonamassa goldtop.

Jerry played a lot of gibson's before finally giving them up!

Every once in a while somoeone will make some cockamamie statment about how Jerry's tone is really all about his style and fingers. This is the second video I've seen with Jerry playing someone else's equipment (the other time was with some Latin actor). In both cases he sounds like absolute crap.

This should be proof positive that his tone wasn't just about style and fingers. He actually does play with relatively the same style he normally does - but those quirky mishits he sometimes has dont' sound good on this setup - they sound like mistakes.
