I'd be impressed if it picked up the subtle sound of one nostril becoming plugged and the other freeing up.

HA!

BTW, did you figure out if you could a matrix recording?

1 track/channel/side with the on-board mics and another a feed from a board?

not 100% sure yet...

but it's looking like NO

I believe it has 2 separate modes
1) stereo speakers
2) line in or 1/4"/XLR inputs

gotta dig deeper though (in my nose that is)

Rusty the Scoob wrote:Thanks for the tips, Emoto! Now I have to decide if I can justify the $$... How much was the 8 GB card?
I think I paid close to $90, but I don't really need a card that big. Like I was saying, the largest file we've made when recording a whole practice is 1.8 GB, so I could have gotten a 2 GB or 4 GB card. Circuit City has the 4 GB cards for $25.00. Of course I am recording in WAV for best fidelity. If you record in MP3, which it will do, you can fit tons of music on the 512 card that comes with it.

Cool. Hey I just noticed you are based near my old neighborhood. I lived about 1/2 mile from the Waltham line on North Street in Newton before I moved farther south. The town I am in now is about 40 minutes away from there. I will try to keep an eye out for your gigs.

You should check out our Fennario Fest in Auburn, MA August 8th & 9th. There will be about 10 bands over 2 days - Gilmour's Breakfast will be one of the bands - they are a great Floyd tribute band. What could be better - jambands during the day - the Dead and Floyd at night - camping...

We're also playing at the same place - just a regular night gig in their lodge on July 21st.

Hey Now,

Sounds like this Zoom H4 with a larger sound card is a great way to record at a reasonable cost.

I am seriously thinking about it for my little studio.

Is there an advantage to recording wav. vs mp3???

Any more thoughts positive or negative about this device.

Thanks for the input

Hmmm. Well, I cannot assess your needs, but I prefer the H2. Less expensive than the H4, does everythign I need, and makes excellent recordings.

I prefer to record in WAV format because of its high audio quality. I can always rip to MP3 later for smaller lower audio quality files to share around.

Thanks Emoto,
very good information that I can understand.
I have a 300 sq ft studio in my garage that is completely finished and insulated. There is a drum set, keyboards, couple of amps and microphones. Not to mention guitars.

I like the idea of keeping it simple and think you are right about the H2.
My jamming buddies and I have been talking about how to record adn this sound like the way to go.
Also bet I could do some stealth recording at my place when we have some bands.
Ever use it for that?

thanks again for your time and effort
Much Obliged

Hey, no worries. I have used my H2 for recording band practices, and our only gig to date. I was going to resurrect my old cassette recorder, but it was in kind of rough shape and I stumbled across the new breed of field recorders as I started to research replacements. There are a lot of them on the market. Tascam and others make similar units. I don't pretend to have made an exhaustive study of all of them. The Zoom H2 was on the lower end of things price-wise, so it was a little easier to consider buying. What made the difference for me was that several music stores local to me carried the Zoom, and they all had good things to say about it. Plus, it being local, I could see it and hold it in my hand.

In the small room we rehearse in (we are bass, drums, keys, and guitar) I found that sticking the H2 up on a mic stand near the ceiling gives me a good sound. For stealth, you could stick the thing in a corner and it would be relatively inconspicuous.

What I do is record the rehearsal and then drag the file into my PC and use Audacity to chop it up into separate songs. I then burn a CD of them and hand the CDs out to the other guys.

Sounds good Emoto,
I just bought on on ebay for 199 including shipping and a 4gb card.....
dumb question....what is Audacity, where do you get it, what does it do....I presume it is software for my computer??

thanks again.....you have one more gig than we do....trying to get up the courage and confidence to play in front of people....I am a chef and have done cooking demonstrations on a stage for 300-500 people and am not scared at all....I love doing it...but the thought of playing my guitar and singing in front of people makes me pucker hard....any ideas from anyone how to not feel like that???...getting too medicated doesn't make sense....in our jam sessions I swear we nail it sometimes...so the need to record and verify....thanks again...

Cool! Yeah, Audacity is an audio file editing program. You can download it for free here: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ It can do a lot;I only use a small part of its functionality. Once you've saved your WAV files to the computer, you fire up Audacity and open the Wav file with it. It shows you the file graphically represented. I highlight sections corresponding to songs and then save the selected section as a new file. Once you start playing around with it, you'll see. It can also adjust volume, balance, and other things.

As far as being nervous goes, When I was first in bands I used to get really nervous until after the 1st or second song. Now, something like 27-28 years later, I get a little bit of adrenaline, but realise that most people in the crowd are just out to have a good time, and will pretty much just roll with whatever you do. In other words "I guess it doesn't matter anyway..."
