The guy at the guitar shop told me that at least twice a week someone comes in and says that they're the best ever at Guitar Hero and figure they're some kind of natural guitar player, so they came in looking for a real guitar to buy. 
Of course it's his job is to sell guitars so he plays along. "Sure buddy, it's pretty much just like the video game."
Meh, I don't think there's any harm in the game. I played it at my little cousin's house. It's certainly better for kids than you're average shoot em up game. They learn a little about music and rhythm. And if you think about it...people are paying money to pretend to do what we (well, maybe not me yet, but I'm getting there) can do in real life. In some small way, that could be taken as a compliment.
