That entire 3-night run at The Ark is nasty - I've had 2 of the shows for about 10 years, fucking LOVE them. Can't find the other one anymore though...wish I could.

but as for psychedelic dead, try dark star 11/11/73 or 8/27/72 and playin in the band 6/22/73

Did it for me! My two favourite Dark Stars, plus everything else on the setlists is on fire too.

Also, hearing these two totally different Dark Stars should be a good introduction to the improvisation of the Dead.

You're exactly three years off. Try 2/27/69 as the Live Dead Dark Star.

As far as "psychedelic w/o the scary" ... the two are inseparable! Can't have good times w/o bad times.

How come nobody mentioned Two From The Vault? A classic from the heyday of Psychedelia IMO. Dark Star>St. Stephen>Eleven is as good as it can get, and a lot of raw energy there. Maybe in those days there was less technical finesse, but the adventurous spirit really came through. Also, you can't go wrong with anything from '69, as mentioned before. Live/Dead is a must, Fillmore West gives even more different insights. I would be careful with the '73/'74 stuff - a lot of it is too jazzy for my taste and if somebody is looking for "psychedelic", he/she might just have imagined something different.

heres a late reply for that. I remember reading about how Jer didn't like how the brigde of the song slowed the whole momentum of the song and didn't like how it was resolved to get back up to speed.
as for phycadelia i'd say one of those rare acid test recordings where jerrys ranting - like a soundtrack to a madhouse. not that you would play that to turn someone on to the dead, maybe play that to blow someones mind on strong L

Nothing like a Maine show baby! Was just listening to this last weekend, in fact. It's the 2nd Throwing Stones, and you can really hear how much better it got over the years. Same w/ Touch, they don't even go back to the Bridge after the solo in this version, they just head into the last verses.

5-5-77 is a good later show for a trip. The leads are more flowy and bubbly, with great music selections.. but no darkstar, which is probably what you need to melt your friends mind, try one of the early fillmor recordings
