This is a hard answer for me ... there have been some great responses with some KILLER shows on tape ... but I have to also take a look at it considering shows I attended .... as great as a show can sound thru some head phones .... theres alot to be said about being there ....granted I only sw shows from 82 - 94 , however saw ALOT of them and had some unbelievable experiences ... Mickey and Billy definately went alot of places I would truly refer to as psychedelic .... sometimes the right combination of crowd, lights, sound, song, okay yes doses, and Mexicali Blues can take a man places he has never been before ... most of their songs can ... it's just some of them RARELY went there ...

if you are just picking isolated songs, i think any Cosmic Charlie would be quite psychedelic

maybe my memory is skewed by the experience I had last night listening to 4-15-1969 but I would have to say this is one hell of a show. The band is loose yet full of fire and it sounds like they are having a blast. You can sense the transition from the more rough sound of 1968 and before into the more relaxed (in terms of the band having fun with the songs rather than forcing them out) style they later developed. As relaxing as 1969 Grateful Dead can be anyways... this show is really quite trippy.

I had finished up a night of hanging out and a few beers and a joint and was about to go to bed when I went into my room (I had been playing the first set in the background earlier and it had kept going) when they were finishing up Sittin' on Top of the World and going into Cryptical. I was mesmerized (perhaps in part because of my state) and sat there listening to jerry and the boys do their thing. I pondered life and existence until the end of the set, sitting perfectly zenned into the music between the speakers.

Wow, anyway.... quality of the recording not the greatest (there is a chick talking through half the show, thankfully she shuts up when the taper is like wait, listen to what is going on, or when jerry makes one of his powerful intrusions on the conciousness, you cannot but sit (or stand) quiety and in awe.

So, definitley throw on something from '69. Acid-soaked and fun as hell. Live/Dead would be a good alternative to a "shitty" AUD recording seeing as uninitiated peoples might not understand the magic of being there. But then again, you get the individual high enough and they'll realize.

I would recommend any '73 '74 show with Eyes of the World. If you're turning someone onto the Dead I'd say Dark Star, Viola, etc. may be too much. Eyes is psychadelic and mellow with just a real pleasant vibe..... but maybe that's only my opinion.

Other tunes for me though would be Help/Slip, Cryp/Other One/Cryp., Scarlett/Fire, Estimated, Terrapin, and....Morning Dew. Anybody know a show where they did all these (highly unlikely I do realize)?

I have no problem with sub-par audio-quality when we're
talking about shows from the 60s. It's sort of part of the
experience, at least for me since I never got the opportunity
to see them live at that time (or anytime).

Morning Dew, excellent song. It's really just recently that
I fell in love with that one. It's poetry and beauty in a
story that's essentially sad. Mmm, did I tell you I love it?

Cosmic Charlie, also a favorite. I actually love alot of the
songs from Aoxomoxoa, but I haven't heard alot of them in
decent live versions - I'm thinking Dupree's and Doin' That
Rag. But I digress, Cosmic Charlie is a cool song.

Don't you just hate hearing a 60s show and wishing they'd
play any of the songs from the 70s or 80s, but knowing you'll
never hear them play one of the "new" songs with that old
sound?

space for a newbie might not be a good idea. If you want to introduce a newbie to phychedelic dead then 69 is the way to go. Someone mentioned morning dews from this period as well. I think that may be a great intro, they drip with phychedelic sound.

yeah Space isnt the greatest of ways to get a person hooked on the Dead. I know I wouldnt be listenin if someone came at me with a Space and said listen how good these guys are. Someone mentioned Eyes of the world and that is a perfect song for this I believe. Get a jazzy 73-74 like he said and you cant go wrong. got that psychedelia and it shows off the groovy dead side. because lets face it. Eyes Of The World has got to be one of the best grooves out of any song, any band period!

I would definitely go for Anthem of the Sun, or perhaps even better, The Live at The Fillmore East 2-11-69 set (The one with the cartoon wolf on the front). Those two were the first things that really made the dead just click with me, you kno? Have ne of u guys ever had that one initial moment where u just kind of realize, this is the greatest band that has ever been, or ever will be? I would definitely show him the fillmore one.
