II just recently made a post referencing this in another thread.
I was talking about how the 70's are my favorite era by far and from the looks of it they were jerry's too. Watch some vids on youtube from 77-78 and watch how animaed jerry was, he's grooving the whole time, almost dancing and smiling like crazy, looks like he's having a great time on stage.
Contrast that with the 80's and into the 90s in particular where he more just stands there and plays. I'm sure he's still having a great time but it looks a lot more like he's at work or something than he did during the 70's.

To me I barely ever listen to anything other than 73-78. After like 2+ years of not listening to anyhting other than those years i finally started listening to some 89-90 but IMO nothing beats those blak and white videos from 77-78 where the band is just rocking, the sound quality is just insane and Garcia is basically getting down on stage and has a huge smile the whole time. IMO that was the peak of the Grateful Dead..

Yeah, those were the real fun days to be at shows. If you had been there through most of the 70's it got to be painful at times the rest of the way watching Jerry go downhill. Not that there weren't enough peaks in each and every show to make it worthwhile, but you knew how it had been, and it wasn't that any more.

I'd still give my left nut for just one more Stella Blue or Brokedown Palace- from any period!

Been on a '78 kick lately .... Love Donna and Bobs Vocals together
Its hard for me to pick a Era anymore that i consider all time best
For instance Scarlet-> Fire->Estimated-> Eyes peaked in the 80's - IMHO
And yet the one drummer years are so jammy and out there
I guess the bottom line is Thank God they changed through the years and didnt get stale and beat a dead horse into the ground
