I played a gig in Telluride about a week after the yearly Bluegrass fest about that time (mid-80's), in that bar on the corner on the right in that main-drag pic.
We were in town to play a big wedding up at a lodge on the Mountain, in the summer, (and also booked a local one nighter).
They took our gear up in trucks.
Everyone from the Bride to us guys took the chairlift up.
The Brides father "tipped" the band TWO GRAND!!! (an extra $400 per guy).
The day after we got home to Montana I bought a brand new Moutain Bike (A nice one!), which I still have.
I met some of the fabled "Trust-a-Fari-ans" too.

Whoever bought T-shirts for Jerry in 1985 bought red ones. Fairly soon after, he started going back to the usual black ones. Then in the 90's, someone (whoever did these kinda things for him) started buying blue ones. Once in a great while, you'd see a flannel with the sleeves rolled up, or even a sportcoat. Blair left all this data out of the gear book, I have no idea why. I wonder when the last time he wore a tie-dye was.

Jerry started wearing red t-shirts on the spring tour '85 (maybe sooner) after his bust in January in GG park with dope.I remember seeing the Hampton shows that year and he came out in red? It was like a scarlet letter thing or something. He stayed with it into 86.
By the way, the Dead didn't make it to Colorado in 86. Jer has a diabetic coma after DC and canceled the rest of the tour including the 3 nights that I had tix for at Red Rocks. Did get to see Bob in a small bar in Vail with Kingfish. The Telluride is from summer '87, Harmonic Convergence. I'm clearly as old as your dad. Good times all.

I seem to remember at the time hearing from a friend who had a friend "in the know" that Jer was wearing the brighter colors as part of his drug therapy... happy colors and all that.

Boy, Bobby does look pissed in that pic. But it's offset by the absurd shirt he's wearing.

You and I have a similar friend of a friend who heard a similar story.

Part of JG's drug therapy focused on depression and wearing colors vs black was part of it. As I was told by a friend of friend in the know

Spring tour 85 was the advent of the Red. He wouldn't wear it every night, but at the beginning he wore red more than black. It then filtered back down over the next couple years until disappearing all together.

Right around that time a friend of mine came up with the " The Fat Man Rocks" stickers. I was with him in Portland Maine when a member of GDP sought him out and asked him to stop selling them. Seriously. Obviously it wasnt a copyright infringement. My friend complied but didnt have to.
