I notice LOTS of posts regarding the OBEL, but despite my searching, I've not found an answer to this question, so I'll start yet another thread ...

I see that the wiring for the OBEL is normally: pickups > tone pots > OBEL > buffer > volume pot. And the main purpose is to send a full signal to the fx chain and put the volume after so that you can make volume adjustments without it affecting the sound of the fx. Am I on track so far?

So let's say some poor schmuck (like me) doesn't have the time, money, or skills necessary to implement an OBEL on his guitar. It seems to me that you could get fairly close to the above (in the ballpark at least) by simply using stock wiring, and keeping the volume pot on the guitar turned up to max at all times. Of course this means you lose the ability to adjust volume from the guitar, but otherwise, you end up with a similar result ... a full signal going to the fx chain.

Is that reasonable or am I way off base?

the order is:

pickups > selector > tone pots > BUFFER > OBEL > volume pot


The simplest approach to achieving most of the benefits without actually implementing an OBEL is to simply use a volume pedal after the effects. You won't have the on-board effects loop bypass switch, but you DO get a master volume control with the volume pedal, and then you simply crank the guitar's volume control to hit the effects properly, namely the envelope filter that requires a certain level to trigger.

thanks Brad (I'm a "Brad" too ), that's basically what I figured, and what I've been doing. To solve the volume issue, I've been using a volume pedal at the end of my chain. Simple enough. As for the effects loop switch, I've been thinking about getting one of these http://www.loop-master.com/product_info ... ucts_id=32 ... which is basically just that an effects loop switch in a stompbox format.
