Not draining the cap.

With all due respect - the guy was not sitting on the stool. It's obvious the bits of cap on it are there because the most of the stool was covered by the bench top. Had he been sitting there, his body would have prevented any bits-o-junk from dropping onto the back edge of the stool.

This was a setup - the guy either knew or suspected that powering up that device was going to supply a huge over-voltage to the cap and blow it up. When it blew, he made a short video - scary, true, but easily avoided (or predicted).
