hi all im selling my MC 500 and blues junior and every thing else, they will go on eebay soon if no onw wants them here. im selling them because i want to build up a new rig, im haveing a new guitar built by AO guitars which will be a similar shape to the MC seires but will be completly hollow and have radical F holes and wiring and guts similar to that of jerry's with a hint of trey and classic sound. aside from this im looking in to a new amp and effects. i know it gets talked about alot here but what are the mose needed guitar effects to get both a jerry garcia and trey anastasio and david gilmore sound?
i was thinking tube screamer, q-tron, compresor, flanger, chorus,delay and a moogerfooger ring modulator
any thoughs?
as far as the amps go i have no ideas, i have always found it very hard to dial in the right sounds on the eq on a hollowbody and suggestions for eq settings or amps to try? i was looking at a custom vibrolux reverb any thoughts?

That sounds like a hell of a guitar AO guitars is doing for you. If you still have the MC500 let me know. I think the pedals you listed are all good choices for the sound(s) you are looking for. Maybe nxt is to decide on the amp that will get you all three. I imagine a Twin would do it?

are you in Maine? I would love to actually see the MC500 in person. I have only seen pics. Also, I have a few onboard preamp questions for my MC150. Was thinking of having a overdrive/boost board installed into the MC150 from Guitarfetish.com. Have you ever seen or heard one if these. I cant find anyone that has actually used one. Sounds like your new guitar is going to have some nifty options however.

It doesnt carry the right vibe or sounds. i have had only a few guitars in my 5-6 year playing time and i've never really been very happy with them. the two most recent are the ibanez awd82 which i thought would get a nice woody tone with natural feedback, but i was wrong in fact i always felt the guitar was too bassy sounding. the one im playing full time now is the MC500 a great guitar, it is all stock and i has a great jerry sound but i would say that as much as love jerry and he is reason i started to play, the heavier jam bands ( phish and MOE.) have always had my ear. i wanted to have languedoc guitar copy build but i dropped that idea because languedocs are so closely associated with trey. but after seeing phish live the other day i want that sound, not exactly but that feedback and wah sound trey uses. i play in an instrumental band and we write our own stuff and have started to record a demo, and im having a hard time getting the sound i want.

Do you have an EQ pedal? I also have a blues jr and was having trouble with mine sounding too bassy, but a decent rolloff of the lowest two bars (even with Bass on the amp turned down to 2) gets me to a good place. I also recently discovered that it has to be played really loud (Master maxed out, volume past 40% at least) before it really starts to sound like a guitar. The amp's tone stack controls seem to behave a little bit differently once you get it cranked enough. Before you scrap the whole rig you might just want to mess around more with your variables (pickup/tone knob combinations, EQ, volume). There's a science to dialing in the tone you want (talking base tone, w/o effects) with any amp/guitar combination. Different amp/speaker combos just have different "natural EQ" and with an EQ pedal or nice rack EQ you should be able to get close to what you want with any amp.

I can't imagine three more disparate tones to want to latch onto than Garcia, Gilmore an Trey from one rig. Maybe throw in Charlie Christian an Django for good measure?

I mean, JG had that signature clean Fender sound and his own arsenal of FX; Gilmore has played through heavilly customized Cornish pedalboards to everything from Hiwatts to Mesas to an Alembic F2-B; Trey has usually played through a Fender amp, but with two TS-9 stacked (an God knows what else) in the chain - AND he's got the hollowbody axe. I mean, it's a lot to try to get out of one rig...

Agreed... that's a lot to ask out of a little amp like the Blues Jr. I have had one for a number of years and I use it as my travel amp. Actually I can get a pretty kicking Anastasio tone out of it with my cheep Ibanez Artcore semi hollow body and 2 TS-9's. Dime the mid eq and back the bass all the way out and like a 4.5 - 6 on the treble see what you think. I'm not totally sure but way but I'm pretty sure back in the day Trey actually played a Ibanez musician guitar a white one, you can see it in that really cheesy band promo photo they did in the mid 80's and I think there is a shot of it in the Phish Book. I know absolutely nothing about David Gilmore's sound other than he was a MXR Phase guy too in the 70's. As far as Garcia with the Blues Jr, I didn't have a lot of luck and even now when I plug my Rosebuddy guitar into the BJ it's not there at all..IMHO good to very good Garcia tone comes from the JBL/Dimarzio/Fender recipie.

if you are looking for a good trey anastasio tone i can actually get incredibly close with a telecaster into a fender deluxe reverb. pedal wise i have 2 ts 808s with the silver mod, a boss compression sustainer and a chorus pedal. trey uses single coils much more than i thought (the humbuckers on his koa model are coil tapped) and if you switch off the pedals you get a good jerry tone.

Not to be an evangelist for Fractal Audio or anything, but this is the kind of thing the AxeFX is made for ... one 2-space rack rig with a limitless palette of tone possibilities. I have not got around to trying to knock Trey's tone with it yet (perhaps Hogan or NashvilleMike or some of the other folks here have), but since there is a Deluxe amp model, the TS-9 is represented (and you can have two of them together, of course, and pedal and multiband compression, I'm sure it's very do-able. I've been playing around with it lately looking for other tones, and it's pretty remarkable. There was just a major update to it (9.0) that has really improved the feel of the amp models and the reverb, and it was pretty damn good before. Here are a few examples of the variety you can get out of it if you know what you're doing:

It's all in there ... if you can get it out. Even if you can't ... I got Joaquim to send me his presets ... he doesn't mind sharing. I wish I could play like him, though, he is excellent.

FWIW, he also bought an Eleven rack to try it out ... he liked it a lot, wound up selling it because the AxeFX is deeper and he likes being able to use different speaker cabinets and amp models and effects, but that's also an option. Not sure how well the Eleven will handle the "true" Garcia tone, but StrumminSix has one.

AxeFX ultra is an amazing piece of gear. It has everything you could want and my tone has never been better. Duane. Pete, Jerry, Bob, Jimmy, Jimi, Keith, Eric, Brian, Rick...they all live in there, you just have to figure how to let them out.
