Having an interesting conversation with someone on a recording forum about mixing; he told me that Billy and Mickey used to tune their kick drums to different frequencies (low E and C) to help differentiate them in the mix.
He also noted that Healy sometimes would mix the band in stereo opposite from the stage image, so the keys would come from the left instead of the right, and the drummers were reversed -- as if the perspective on the board was from the stage, looking toward the audience instead of vice versa. I've noticed that on some of the soundboards and wondered if the inputs were just reversed on the recordings along the line somewhere, but maybe not.
Right now I'm trying to get a better bass sound, with so-so results. It's being suggested to high pass the bass around 60hz to remove some mud, and use more compression on it to get it "breathing" ... no idea what sort of compression settings are appropriate for the mix, though.
