Chat about Equipment Info

Just caught DSO in Fredericksberg, VA Tuesday night (4/1/86) and noticed the mics on the speaker cabs were these flat, boxy things. I asked their sound guy (not Healy that night) between sets and he said they were Healy designs from the late '80s that didn't do the usual sound pickup of a regular mic, but rather picked up on the actual activity of the magnets in the speakers. I asked if they were attenuated to the JBLs they were on (they were just on Rob & John's rigs) or if they worked with any type of driver... he said they worked on anything.

Now, this seemed weird to me as you lose picking up the nuances of the actual cones and the frequencies generated, but then I don't know anything more about them - the conversation got cut short when they had to set up a couple of new channels for Keller, who just sorta showed up  ...

Anyone have any info on these things?
