Treble adds gain, mids don't work without bass, deep switches lose gain. Check your bass control! For a lot of stuff, you can just turn it off. Wack your low E and advance the bass control to its first threshold and leave it. That should be plenty. For what it's worth, Garcia used NO bass, bass zero on his Fender amps. Pointing to the mid-range control, he told me "That's your bass control". He was right... "

Fully, a great quote. However, the part I extracted was the first thing I discovered and started me on the path for "my sound" and "good guitar tone".

That's a post from a few years back on SK's forum. But these basic tone setting ideas have been kicking around this site and Y!GH for several years now, no? If you hadn't seen his forum before, I guess it reassures that you are on the right track.

Awesome! I'm a big fan of taking the low end out of everything but the bass and kick drum. Low end on midrange instruments and vocals just creates a mushy mix without adding anything musically. But then again I'm not quite objective on the subject.

BINGO! Being my band's Bobby I sound rather thin solo but as soon as the band plays - POP! right there perfectly!
I've found for guitar being able to carefully dial in your low mids and dial out your bass is very, VERY key.
