I disagree. It's like comparing Derek Trucks to Jerry. Both amazing, inventive players, but they're too different to really compare.

Buddy Cage told me back in Dec '08 that Hunter had written several new tunes (like 7, iirc) for the NRPS, and Nelson was reading/singing them off of a lyric sheet that night.

Was this the only "Grateful Dead" related aspect of "Silvio"? I seem to remember at the time it was released some DJ saying that some of the boys backed him up in the studio, although I've never seen any credits as such. I'm not sure what it is about that song but I just absolutely love the hell outta it. In fact I love that whole Dylan/Dead/Traveling Wilbury's era. Wish they coulda milked it for more. Jerry shoulda been a Wilbury.

Nope, he's just gone silent. I asked him about it. He replied by saying he was on the hottest writing streak of his life and that he didn't have time to (1) update journals or write stories or (2) reply to my email properly. Cast of Clowns, NRPS, Dylan... That does sound busy to me!

I believe Jerry, Bob, and Brent do backing vocals on Silvio. The easy test is to listen again with that in mind. They all have unique voices.

Yeah... I can see the comparison to Jerry wanting to play with, say, Carlos or Coleman or something. Hard to make an equasion of music idoms to words, but it is definitely in the Beat tradition that they both came out of...

Hunter was/is so much more concise than Dylan in getting his imagery across. Dylan is a poet but Hunter's words are quite a bit more catchy. Seems like a good combination to me... looking forward to hearing the tunes!

I would love to know how they co-write together. Do they sit in the same room? It is via the internet? Are they outside smoking a phatty and riffing off each other with a tape recorder going? Does one of them do most of it and the other just add a few choice rhymes? What I would give to be a fly on the wall during this collaboration!
