When it doesn't fit anywhere else

Hey yall,

I keep breaking the G string on my Martin Acoustic. 4 times in the last week. I'm not sure why it keeps breaking but it's really pissing me off. I think maybe the bridge might be too sharp and is cutting through the string.

Anyone know how I can fix this? any advice?

thanks
bob

You'll probably get better advice from someone other than me, but just in case...

If you're breaking the same string over and over again you may have a burr somewhere on your guitar that is cutting into it. Where's it breaking? If it's at the nut, take a small file or folded-up piece of fine-grained sandpaper and gently sand the nut slot to smooth it out. Ditto for the bridge. If it's somewhere else or it happens in random places, maybe try another brand of strings.

I like to lube my bridge and nut with the lead from a common pencil. Just "write" on it up and down and back and forth until it is well colored. The graphite in the pencil lead is the lube. You will also feel any sharp edges as you are doing this. This is done with the string(s) off.

My G string usually only breaks when the women pull too hard on it. Wait, did I just say that out loud?

What gauge strings are you using? I've found that if a set it too light for my playing, the G is one to go first, wound or unwound for some reason.

I've broken strings as thick as an A before. Still trying to work my way up to an E.

I also like to lube up my nut so that my g string sits very nicely

I find that my G strings break most easily when flatting a 3rd.
