I've been working on a new way to present scales for my students, the idea is to present the full scale but focusing on one chord, this is for learning how to solo. It's alot easier to write chord charts on paper. Here's the lay out I was think of using for digital purposes
Scale: C major/A minor
Focus: C major = C, E, G
the numbered notes are the 3 notes that make up the chord, the * are other notes in the scale,

E:0::*:: ::3:: ::*:: ::*::8:: ::**:: ::12::**:: ::15
B:*::1:: ::*:: ::5::*:: ::8:: ::**:: ::**::13:: ::**
G:0:: ::*:: ::*::5:: ::*:: ::9::**:: ::12:: ::**::
D:*:: ::2::*:: ::5:: ::*:: ::*::10:: ::**:: ::14::**
A:*:: ::*::3:: ::*:: ::7::*:: ::10:: ::**:: ::**::15
e:0::*:: ::3:: ::*:: ::*::8:: ::**:: ::12::**:: ::15

the idea is to then present the same scale with a different focus chord.
Scale: C major/ A minor
Focus: Am = A, C, E

E:0::*:: ::*:: ::5:: ::*::8:: ::**:: ::12::**:: ::**
B:*::1:: ::*:: ::5::*:: ::*:: ::10:: ::**::13:: ::**
G:*:: ::2:: ::*::5:: ::*:: ::9::**:: ::**:: ::14::
D:*:: ::2::*:: ::*:: ::7:: ::*::10:: ::**:: ::14::**
A:0:: ::*::3:: ::*:: ::7::*:: ::**:: ::12:: ::**::15
e:0::*:: ::*:: ::5:: ::*::8:: ::**:: ::12::**:: ::**

see, what I'm trying to get at?
I do one more for good measure.
I'll go with G, so we'll have a nice Am, C, G progression to work with.

Scale: C major/A minor
Focus: G major = G, B, D

E:*::*:: ::3:: ::*:: ::7::*:: ::10:: ::**::**:: ::15
B:0::*:: ::3:: ::*::*:: ::8:: ::**:: ::12::**:: ::15
G:0:: ::*:: ::4::*:: ::7:: ::*::**:: ::12:: ::**::
D:0:: ::*::*:: ::5:: ::*:: ::9::**:: ::12:: ::**::**
A:*:: ::2::*:: ::5:: ::*::*:: ::10:: ::**:: ::14::**
e:*::*:: ::3:: ::*:: ::7::*:: ::10:: ::**::**:: ::15

so, If we we're to play a basic 3, 1, 5 progression
in C (i.e. Am, C, G) we could use these three charts as a map for our different chords. start with Am, begin and end your phrases with the letter note (which are in the chord) use the *notes as connectors, then as we switch to C, look at the C scale, and repeat the process. let me know how you feel about the chart lay outs, and let me know if this helps at all, I can go more into detail if anybody would like, but for the moment I was just trying to figure out the best way to draw the charts digitally

I looks great.. I thinnk it is very helpful.

I would be interested in the final copy of this project...

In the key of Cmaj Am C G is 6 1 5. 3 1 5 would be Em C G. Or am I missing something?

sorry, i meant C, Am, G. the thought process is confusing when your trying to create a master scalre series, when I have the thought process figured out I'll post the whole thing and proof read it first. I need to layer it better, and i need to stop thinking in the relative minor and major key at the same time. It's a fault I've been trying to overcome lately. I'm not dyslexic, I'm just stoned:)

Spilly, 'preciate you working this stuff out for us all, but after looking at all them dots, I'm wondering if I'm stoned or if I should be trying to pick some sort of image out of it all. I actually thought I saw Jerry handing a little girl a flower. Just busting man, I think my playing is at the point I'm ready to receive what you're presenting. Looking foward to when you figure how to get it up there.

Sorry Spilly, I still didn't get that. C Am G would then be 1-6-5, or am I completely off the reservation? Not that there is anything wrong with a 1-6-5 chord progression, but I thought we were talking 3-1-5. Unless you meant A minor scale, then it would be 3-1-7, which would be a little weird for a chord progression, and I would also have to think if G major would be the in-family chord there (I admit to being weak on the chord families for minor scales). So, I got lost....

The diagrams look great. Written that way, the CAGED method jumps right off the page at me for the major chords. I hope you don't mind, but I am planning on copying that into a Word doc and showing it to my daughter, as I seem to be having a lot of trouble explaining CAGED to her. The only question I have is, is there any significance to the notes with the two stars "**"?

actually, the whole idea is to see shapes and patterns, but yes I agree, it was a bit cluster-fucked. I've decided to break it down more. Here's where I'm at, if this makes sense to you guys I'll start putting the full lesson together. If it's still to complicated I'll try a different route.
Here's where I'm at: I'll explain what I'm trying to do in one hand possition real quick.

Key= C
focus= C (C,E,G)
*= notes in C chord

5 7
E-:: :: :: :: ::*::
B-:: ::*:: :: ::*::
G-:: ::*:: :: :: ::
D-:: ::*:: :: :: ::
A-:: :: :: ::*:: ::
e-:: :: :: :: ::*::

the next layer we'll add is the penatonic. since we're playing a C chord in C, we'll obviously go with the C major Penatonic (note. C major pen. and Am pen are the same scale.)

Key= C
Focus= C (C,E,G)
*= notes in C chord
o= remaining penatonic notes (A,D)

5 7
E-:: ::o:: :: ::*::
B-:: ::*:: :: ::*::
G-:: ::*:: ::o:: ::
D-:: ::*:: ::o:: ::
A-:: ::o:: ::*:: ::
e-:: ::o:: :: ::*::

the final layer adds the remaining notes from our C scale to our penatonic

Key= C
Focus= C (C,E,G)
*= notes in C/Am penatonic (C,D,E,G,A)
o= remaining notes in C scale (F,B)

5 7
E-:: ::*:: ::o::*::
B-:: ::*::o:: ::*::
G-::o::*:: ::*:: ::
D-:: ::*:: ::*:: ::
A-:: ::*:: ::*::o::
e-:: ::*:: ::o::*::

which finally brings us to the full scale as a whole
Key= C

5 7
E-:: ::*:: ::*::*::
B-:: ::*::*:: ::*::
G-::*::*:: ::*:: ::
D-:: ::*:: ::*:: ::
A-:: ::*:: ::*::*::
e-:: ::*:: ::*::*::

So, now I'll try it on the whole neck (well, most of the neck)

Key= C
focus= C (C,E,G)
*= notes in C chord

0 3 5 7 9 12 15
E-:*:] :: ::*:: :: :: :: ::*:: :: :: ::*:: :: ::*::
B-: :]*:: :: :: ::*:: :: ::*:: :: :: :: ::*:: :: ::
G-:*:] :: :: :: ::*:: :: :: ::*:: :: ::*:: :: :: ::
D-: :] ::*:: :: ::*:: :: :: :: ::*:: :: :: ::*:: ::
A-: :] :: ::*:: :: :: ::*:: :: ::*:: :: :: :: ::*::
e-:*:] :: ::*:: :: :: :: ::*:: :: :: ::*:: :: ::*::

add the penatonic notes.
Key= C
Focus= C (C,E,G)
*= notes in C chord
o= remaining penatonic notes (A,D)

0 3 5 7 9 12 15
E-:*:] :: ::*:: ::o:: :: ::*:: ::o:: ::*:: :: ::*::
B-: :]*:: ::o:: ::*:: :: ::*:: ::o:: :: ::*:: ::o::
G-:*:] ::o:: :: ::*:: ::o:: ::*:: :: ::*:: ::o:: ::
D-:o:] ::*:: :: ::*:: ::o:: :: ::*:: ::o:: ::*:: ::
A-:o:] :: ::*:: ::o:: ::*:: :: ::*:: ::o:: :: ::*::
e-:*:] :: ::*:: ::o:: :: ::*:: ::o:: ::*:: :: ::*::

here is the penatonic as a whole:

Key= C
Focus= C (C,E,G)
*= notes in C/Am penatonic (C,D,E,G,A)

0 3 5 7 9 12 15
E-:*:] :: ::*:: ::*:: :: ::*:: ::*:: ::*:: :: ::*::
B-: :]*:: ::*:: ::*:: :: ::*:: ::*:: :: ::*:: ::*::
G-:*:] ::*:: :: ::*:: ::*:: ::*:: :: ::*:: ::*:: ::
D-:*:] ::*:: :: ::*:: ::*:: :: ::*:: ::*:: ::*:: ::
A-:*:] :: ::*:: ::*:: ::*:: :: ::*:: ::*:: :: ::*::
e-:*:] :: ::*:: ::*:: :: ::*:: ::*:: ::*:: :: ::*::

next layer is the remaining notes in the scale

Key= C
Focus= C (C,E,G)
*= notes in C/Am penatonic (C,D,E,G,A)
o= remaining notes in C scale (F,B)

0 3 5 7 9 12 15
E-:*:]o:: ::*:: ::*:: ::o::*:: ::*:: ::*::o:: ::*::
B-:o:]*:: ::*:: ::*::o:: ::*:: ::*:: ::o::*:: ::*::
G-:*:] ::*:: ::o::*:: ::*:: ::*::o:: ::*:: ::*:: ::
D-:*:] ::*::o:: ::*:: ::*:: ::o::*:: ::*:: ::*::o::
A-:*:] ::o::*:: ::*:: ::*::o:: ::*:: ::*:: ::o::*::
e-:*:]o:: ::*:: ::*:: ::o::*:: ::*:: ::*::o:: ::*::

which brings us to our scale as a whole
Key= C

0 3 5 7 9 12 15
E-:*:]*:: ::*:: ::*:: ::*::*:: ::*:: ::*::*:: ::*::
B-:*:]*:: ::*:: ::*::*:: ::*:: ::*:: ::*::*:: ::*::
G-:*:] ::*:: ::*::*:: ::*:: ::*::*:: ::*:: ::*:: ::
D-:*:] ::*::*:: ::*:: ::*:: ::*::*:: ::*:: ::*::*::
A-:*:] ::*::*:: ::*:: ::*::*:: ::*:: ::*:: ::*::*::
e-:*:]*:: ::*:: ::*:: ::*::*:: ::*:: ::*::*:: ::*::

I wish I could say that's all there is to it, but that's not true. let me know how you feel about this lesson template, if it works I'll begin the whole lesson in a new thread, if it's still too much, I'll continue this thread until I get it right!

for me the numbers on the fret board are easier to read and follow...

 #44223  by spilly

hmm, the numbers we're over the right frets when I wrote it, and where the hell did the smiley faces come from?

 #44224  by spilly

I think I will go back to putting the numbers on the fret board.

for what it's worth, i kinda liked the smiley faces. Let me know that hitting those notes was a happy thing - on key!! Though I guess the smileys should have been the focus notes (C, E, and G), and the *'s on the other notes. Real happy when I hit the C E or G in the key of C, but hitting the others is OK.

any ways, I'm enjoying the progression of this chart. thanks for the effort put in. it's got me thinking of things a little differently and that opens doors.
:smile:

fwiw, If you put the smiley faces where the chord shapes are, you have basically recreated the CAGED system.

Sorry guys. It must be why I still suck at playing but I am totally unfamiliar with charts like this and with the CAGED in general. All I'm seeing is a Calliope at a Seaside Zoo. You guys are all on this so I know I have to peresevere and figure this out but could you explain it so a dumb ass can get it. Brother Spilly, you is going the extra furlong to put this out there. Much gratitude.

Hi Spilly, I like what you're doing.

Move that Capital E to the bass E string and the small caps e to the treble e string.

e:0::*:: ::3:: ::*:: ::*::8:: ::**:: ::12::**:: ::15
B:*::1:: ::*:: ::5::*:: ::8:: ::**:: ::**::13:: ::**
G:0:: ::*:: ::*::5:: ::*:: ::9::**:: ::12:: ::**::
D:*:: ::2::*:: ::5:: ::*:: ::*::10:: ::**:: ::14::**
A:*:: ::*::3:: ::*:: ::7::*:: ::10:: ::**:: ::**::15
E:0::*:: ::3:: ::*:: ::*::8:: ::**:: ::12::**:: ::15

Then you may want to have, when you come to a lesson emphasis point, another row of your fret board, but instead of the fret numbers put the actual notes.

Like:

Scale: C major/A minor
Focus: C major = C, E, G

e|0::*:: ::3:: ::*:: ::*::8:: ::**:: ::12::**:: ::15
B|*::1:: ::*:: ::5::*:: ::8:: ::**:: ::**::13:: ::**
G|0:: ::*:: ::*::5:: ::*:: ::9::**:: ::12:: ::**::
D|*:: ::2::*:: ::5:: ::*:: ::*::10:: ::**:: ::14::**
A|*:: ::*::3:: ::*:: ::7::*:: ::10:: ::**:: ::**::15
E|0::*:: ::3:: ::*:: ::*::8:: ::**:: ::12::**:: ::15

e|E::*:: ::G:: ::*:: ::*::C:: ::**:: ::EE::**:: ::GG
B|*::C:: ::*:: ::E::*:: ::G:: ::**:: ::**::CC:: ::**
G|G:: ::*:: ::*::C:: ::*:: ::E::**:: ::GG:: ::**::
D|*:: ::E::*:: ::G:: ::*:: ::*::CC:: ::**:: ::EE::**
A|*:: ::*::C:: ::*:: ::E::*:: ::GG:: ::**:: ::**::CC
E|E::*:: ::G:: ::*:: ::*::C:: ::**:: ::EE::**:: ::GG

Not too bad.
