In the mid to late 70's I saw a Garcia show with Nicky Hopkins on piano at Queens College in NYC. Does anybody know if any shows from this tour are available. It was a great show.

The Rhino compilation 'The Very Best of Jerry Garcia' has one cut from the band that willmusic mentioned playing 'Positively 4th Street', the Dylan song.
One thing that caught my attention is shear amount of playing Nicky Hopkins does on this cut, solos as well as fills. This makes me wonder whether Hopkins was considered the bigger 'star' at this time due to his exposure with the Stones. He was pretty big with Quicksilver too. Jerry obviously ascended higher but at this moment in time Hopkins was giving no ground in stagemanship in MHO.

Yeah I hear ya...Hopkins was pretty big during that period, I remember at the show jerry made sure everyone there knew that it was nicky hopkins on the piano...they rocked! however, it was billed as the Jerry Garcia Band. anyway thanks for the information from both of you guys...much appreciated.

Nicky was one of only a few that could match Jerry solo for solo. Him with Jerry was a great partnership. Probably the best keys player Jerry played with. Trouble was he was wasted most of the time, had a big problem with the booze and health issues.

Agreed...I saw many different variations of Jerry's band....this lineup w/Nicky Hopkins seemed to have a cleaner sound and more of an edge to the tunes. Of course it's been a while but that's what I recall.

Holy Crap Jck-strw, I didn't know the extent of it all.
I definately need this guys story! There are about 20 of my favorite songs on this list, including maybe my earliest exposure to the magic, 'Revolution'! Great list, do wikitze, we need Exile on Main Street represented.
