So im about to put my massive dead library onto discs, and i want them to look perfect. How do you guys label your live dead shows?

sharpie. any color. DEAD at the top. date. disc #. maybe the location. how great can a burnt maxwell CD look? messing with stick-on labels would be a huge headache with a large library

I use a pack of multi-colored fine point sharpies to label mine. You want to do something to distinguish each show, different colors, writing, a design. This way you can find them quicker and they don't all look exactly a like. Put the date in the same place on each CD though. I like to put the song names on there also.
Just my 2 cents..


Be sure to put Source info on there. I forgot and now have no clue if a source availabvle on line if better than the one I have unless I listen side by side. It is nice to be able to quickly look and see that a better copy is available.

it's a 2 step process for me:
1 - make a simple CD insert using excel spreadsheet with borders
2 - sharpie the discs

Not to mention the damage that stick on labels can do to your player if they are 100% perfectly centered.

I used to make labels back when it took an hour+ to download, convert and burn per CD.

looks exactly like how i label my cds. i don't burn much anymore though. started delving into good country music and bluegrass collection is growing too.

i think your handwriting is a little better than mine:P those O's and B's can be hard to draw well without making big blogs of ink

I used to trade discs with a bunch of really anal heads. They (thus I) would only write on the clear inner circle of the disc. No writing on the portion that gets burner.

Now that I am a little older, I need reading glasses to tell whats on those darn discs.

date, venue, disc # i use 50 packs of memorex cd-r for 13 bucks, never had a problem, but one thing i never do with dead cds is put the setlist because it ruins the surprises

First, let me apologise for the absolute crappiness of these photos. Why people use camera phones to take pictures is beyond me. They come out like shit.

Anyhow, here's how I do it. A long time ago, I created a template in Corel. Actually, I created 4 templates--one for 1 CD shows, one for 2 CD shows, etc. I just fill in the date, place, setlist, source and notes. Here's the cover:



Sometimes, I run out of colour ink, so it goes to b&w. The only colour though is the stealie in the middle.

I'm kinda anal when it comes to my CDs. I don't like it when people write on the CD as I have my own "style". Sometimes, I'll go to one of those GD cd covers sites and download something cool/trippy for the CD cover. But that's rare.

I use this same basic template for all the live CDs I have. I just change the band name and the logo in the middle.

If anyone wants the Corel templates I use, let me know and I can send them. I think they can easily be converted to Photoshop or something else.

I'll micro-label only the inner circle when burning FOR other people, and appreciate the same when receiving. But not because I think it has any effect on burning the disc. Simply that it IDs the burnt disc but leaves the writing surface clean for the discs eventual owner.
