Love some John Hurt! I play at least one of his tunes every time I do a solo show. I think I personally got the most from him out of all the other Delta bluesmen. So many guys around here know Robert Johnson and that style, but when I play a MJH song, people have to ask me about it. I've gotten to just telling them what it is before I play it. I was actually turned on to Hurt's style by "Bowling Green" John Cephas (RIP), a VA-based blues player. Being a deadhead, I already knew about Louis Collins and I'd owned the Anthology of American Folk Music, so I'd heard bits and pieces of his material. But when John Taught me Spike Driver Blues, I was hooked. Cephas was primarily a Piedmont blues player, but his evident influences included John Hurt, Gary Davis, and Lemon Jefferson. I think I'm gonna go watch some Hurt on youtube. Thanks by the way for bringin' this up!
