Phil was clued into Phish while the Grateful Dead were still playing. I read an interview where he said while the GD were on tour somebody handed him a tape of Phish and they said check these guys out.

i am thinking phish did not really get that big untill 93. 1994 was when they first sold out msg which to me means, super big. Jerry died in 95 as we all know, so i am thinking he probably knew about them but the music was so different, and jerry was pretty messed up from 1993 - 1995 that he probably did not even think about it too much. I would think he was more wrapped up in his fight with drugs and depression and all.

Also at that point i felt like phish was trying hard not to be associated with the dead, thats just my opinion and what i remeber about the scene in 93 and 94. They had not played a dead cover since 1989. Also it was not untill jerry died...and a few years went by that phish and phil hooked up and for me i always knew that there was a connection especially when they played terrapin on jerry death date in va beach in 98.

AS we have seen and heard the dead had a huge influence on phish. But i really feel jerry was just about out of it when they really hit the scene, and in my opinion probably neveer really thougth about it

I'll bet he would say some of Phish's stuff was good, so not.

Jerry liked them, he just told his kids to steer clear from Mike and under no circumstances look at any of his "art photos".
