Does anyone know if when the GD played Looks Like Rain live Jerry played slide on it?? Because on the Europe 72 CD the version there is so beautiful and it sounds like Jerry playing slide or did he even play the pedal steel on that one live like he did on the original??

Hi Yesterdays Gone Home, (sounds like the name of your band?) no Mr.
Garcia did not play slide or pedal steel on Looks Like Rain live.
I do enjoy his brief stint on Pedal steel in the early 70's (though he never
got to put any real time into it.) He played pedal steel with the New Riders
and as a guest on some 1970 albums like Volunteers and had a big hit
with CSNY with the song Teach Your Children.

If you have the Europe 72 CD with the bonus tracks, Looks Like Rain is one and I'm sure that is a pedal steel i can hear....my ears aren't as expert as yours but check it out...

I have never heard Europe 72 bonus tracks. I'm sure they are quite interesting. I would like to hear more information on the song you have
written. Maybe we can come up with some interesting ideas for it. It seems
like you've put alot of time into it. Your Magnum Opus possibly? If you don't want to get detailed that's understandable. In any event. Good luck.

Jerry definitively plays pedal steel on this recording of Looks like Rain. He also plays it on the live Dire Wolf on the Workingman's Dead bonus disc. That version of Dire Wolf is sung by Weir instead of Garcia because (I think) it's difficult to sing when you're playing pedal steel.

I think he/she may mean on the polished cd of workingmans dead with the bonus tracks, i think there is a live version on there of Dire Wolf. I knew Jerry was playing slide on that europe version...what a song, really played so well...Bobby says just before "Time for a crying song" hes not wrong!

Yeah my mangum opus indeed D, Im always working on that myself...this was a surreal little story i wrote once and its something i go back to for lyrics and little phrases to identify with something. The way i wrote it is a song was pretty straight ahead folk song but with a sweet mandolin part...I might get it on here and transcribe for you guys one day...watch this space..

By the way D, I love what you are doing on these pages and in the tank and i am learning a fair bit...if no one objects i will add some little bits of info and advice myself...

The "Looks Like Rain" on the version of Europe '72 in the Golden Road box-set includes pedal steel.

The pedal steel in the LLR from DP30 (3/28/72) is even more distinct and clear. (worth checking-out)

In the DVD from 4/17/72 Copenhagen, Denmark, as China Cat starts Jerry is standing next to a black Emmons pedal steel guitar, which is not the one he played with the New Riders, etc.

Are there any other known recordings of Jerry playing pedal steel on the Europe '72 tour ?

His main pedal steel was a Zane Beck, where did that Emmons guitar come from ?
