Hey all,
I've been playing for 15+ years and play both electric with a band and acoustic. For acoustic, I have a Martin D-28 and an old epiphone beater that I picked up for a song. I am looking to get another acoustic, either a 12-string or an acoustic that is a cutaway and has electronics so I can plug it in if I wish (my current guitars have neither). So, any advice on which I should purchase and why? I can't get both. Also, I'm only going to spend about $200, so I'm looking at a cheap one of either (and both are readily available in my area in that price range). Thanks for any help!

For $200, you won't find much that's New. So I would go straight to Craigslist... not sure about electronics, but I'd keep eyes peeled for:
Takamine, Epiphone, Fender, and especially Washburn and Seagull for a decent instrument at a very nice price.

Thanks TS, but I have found a Takamine 12 string that is very nice for $200 and a Sigma that a neighbor bought for $500 that he'll sell for $175 that's a cutaway with electronics, so I HAVE the guitars picked out, just don't know WHICH one I should get.

IMHO I would go for the 12 string. You already have an acoustic that you are happy with and can modify with a soundhole pickup if you want to go through an amp.

Sigmas can be nice, at one time in the 70s they had Martin's logo on their headstock under Sigma. They can have high action and be hard to bend on but for power strumming... pretty cool.

I would go with the Sigma, it has everything you are looking for and the price is right.

I think they are the top tier of asian imports based on the association with Martin.

Start reserving the Martin for home and very special occaissions and let the Sigma become your "beater". Everyone needs a beater that they can take to the beach or the campfire or parking lot, or smokey, beer-splashed chaotic bar...

oops- missed the part where you already have the beater Epi!

I'd still vote for the Sigma, but only because I myself have never had too many 12-string urges.

Amyjared, I guess you've already found something, but I've had my eye on this one for a while. I've only heard good things about Ibanez. Prolly what most of you aren't looking for. For a beginner like me, what do you think?
