Scarlet/Fire from Ithaca 5/8/77 is definitely my favorite.....I know many believe this show is overrated, but for me the Scarlet/Fire is one of the main reasons that show is soooo hot (and Morning Dew obviously, and many others) Phil absolutely kills it!! No other version that ive heard does Phil play the way he plays on this version.....such action! sliding all over the place, dropping bombs...... definitely top shelf

In David Letterman Style, I'll give youthe top 5 reasons why 4/3/82, Scope Theatre, Norfolk, VA is tops.

5. Jerry nearly remembers all the words to both songs (slight mishap on last verse of Fire)
4. Solid lead during Scarlet
3. Great space between the two, gets real freaky for a while there
2. The transition from SB to FOTM. If they were ever going to do this in the studio, that is how they would do it.
1. Jerry just goes unconcious at the end of the first Fire solo.

Truly glad I was at this one.

There was one from April of 1984 at the godforsaken Philadelphia Civic Center that was monumental. An unbelievable chord solo during the Scarlet from Jerry. Alas, most memories from that show are foggy at best and I have never found a copy anywhere.

Ya, I often wonder how many people came in a bit late on that "Scar/Fire" opener and thought they missed the first set. I'm a big fan of 6-28-88 SPAC....the first "Fire" solo absolutely shreds, I've rarely heard a version of this combo sung with more gusto by the fat man. Put simply...it rocks!

Oh yea, 7-7-89 has a pretty sweet one (as well as a damn good show ta boot...check out the "Blow Away"). Also, 5-4-77 has an absolutely beautiful entrance into Fire led by Phil...it gives me goose bumps everytime I hear it.

**9/12/81 (the amazing Jim Wise stealth-AUD!)**

One of my all time favorite china>riders right there as well as the scarlet>fire. Excellent run at the greek.

My (totally biased as I was there) absolute favorite Scarlet>fire has to be SPAC 6/18/83 - Jerry thoroughly stretchin out the scarlet jam before he lets loose with a heavy chord shot of E to B, then thunder and lightning during the fire.

If yoos haven't heard it worth a listen at the archive. Kinda rough aud rec but doesn't matter to me. (check out the dew too)

wtf with the edits!!

Not to ignore all of the great mind-bending scarlett/fire's out there, but does anyone prefer the pre-Fire Scarletts? I'm thinking 6/28/74 Boston Gardern . . . some of the 1974 Scarletts stretch out in their own way and explore some pretty cool territories.

Don't forget the '76 "Scarlets"...some of the best I've heard...esp. on "they Day on the Green" DP release. I think one of the best all time "Scarlets" is the SPAC '83 show mentioned above..have to disagree about the "Fire" though BillBill, to me it just sound incohesive and plods.
