Does anyone know the purpose of the brass electronic control cavity cover on Alligator? You know, where Jerry removed a portion of the white pickguard and replaced with sheet brass. I understand the brass plate on the input jack was to cover the larger route accommodating the Stratoblaster and the custom bridge parts were to convert the Strat to a hardtail, but why the brass cavity cover? Did he do it for some tonal reason? Did he do it to look like a J-Bass or Jaguar? Was it as simple has he wanted to be able to access the controls without removing the strings and pickups (as can be done on a telecaster or rear route) and simply made a quick replacement from brass on hand in the shop? Jerry seemed to be deliberate in his mods so I presume it was more than just an aesthetic move like Van Halen screwing a three-way switch into the empty middle-pickup slot on the Frankenstrat's . Anyone have insight or thoughts?

"Right after i started doing guitars for the Garcia band. Jerry was playing an old Fender Stratocaster, and the plastic plate that holds the knobs broke while he was playing and they all fell off the guitar. We had to rig up a quick template on the spot. ~GP July 1988 -Steve Parish~"
