these are my thoughts on two topics that got my attention

first....5-8-77
Very good show but to me not the holy grail of shows like a lot of people make it out to be...to me very good versions of a lot of songs and great playing by the boys but not the best of all of the songs and not necessarily the best versions of any of them....I think the hoax aspect is a riot....roll another one just like the other one...

second ....expensive replica, tribute or other high dollar guitars like the $10K Languedoc

seems to me after a certain amount of money there is definitely a diminishing point of no return especially if you have to reach to buy it

for my money you can get a decent Paul Reed Smith guitar used for 1 to 2 grand that is a dream to play and is a truly beautiful piece of work and art.

I know it is personal taste and preference but 10K for a git box is a whole lot of dough unless you are one of the boys or Trey or who ever.......

thanks for listening and good night now,
Pistol

IMO PRS guitars are grossly overrated. They do nothing differently than any other guitars on the market.

For that dough, look at a Parker Nitefly. With it's exoskeleton design, indestructable fretboard, on board piezo pickup in the cavity and 5lb weight with the sustain of a LP ---> now that is something different.

In my current financial situation...I'd be happy to have a 200-300 dollar guitar. That would be a huge step up from my 100 dollar guitar. If I won the lotto or something I would love to get a nice jerryesque replica.

I agree with the original poster about guitars and what they cost. Especially when you are talking about a solid body electric. I can see where a super high quality, hand made jazz box can run into the thousands, but a machine cut slab of wood with some hardware? It blows my mind what Fender is asking for some of it's guitars nowadays.

My two favorite guitars are actually high end Yamahas that I have had for years, and they really are superb guitars. My Image is a double cutaway solid mahogany carved maple top ( very much like a Les Paul DC ), but has string through body and a coil split. Plays better than just about any Gibson or PRS I have ever tried, and it cost me $500 used. I use an AEX1500 Martin Taylor model for jazz; certainly not a Benedetto or D'Aquisto, but as nice as say an ES-175D for about a third of the money. Plus, it has a piezo transducer under the bridge, and the electronics package is set up so that you can use just the piezo, just the floating humbucker, or blend the two. Plus, it plays absolutely fantastic.

Investment guitars are just that; investments. I buy 'em to play 'em.

I'd have to agree that at about the $2000 mark you have gotten just about the maximum guitar you can get for your $, and after that you are paying for a cosmetic stuff, collectibility, or imperceptibly microscopic increments of greater response or tone, etc.

Just curious about why you think PRS is overated and what exactly should they do differently than other guitars. My professional guitar playing friend would totally disagree with you.

Guitars are like guns and women....very personal tastes and they all serve a purpose for which they were designed

I love my PRS and when I started playin it, It seemed to fit me like a glove and that has made a big difference in my playing

Very good guitar for the money is all I am saying

Peace,

I use a PRS custom 24 and there are things that I love and hate about it. It really is a beauty to play - smooth as butter. I don't like the tremelo system though - but that's just preference - I don't really use it and wish I had a fixed bridge instead.

But - there is much more to high end solid body guitars than slabs of wood. It all depends on what you want out of a guitar.

The wood of the body and neck, as well as finish type, make vast differences is tone and the type of neck - thru or bolt on - as well as hardware, bridge, nut - has a lot to do with tone and sustain. With sandwiched laminates of wood you can blend wood tones to get what you are really looking for.

Then also comes the electronics. Again, personal preference, but if you are a picky freak about it (like me) then you have to have everything specially modified and routed and new components put in which also drives up the price.

But, depending on what you are looking from out of a guitar - a good high end guitar is leaps and bounds ahead of a lower end model - in many cases anyhow. But, it won't make or break your playing or your sound. If you have a great guitar and crappy amp then what's the point?

Read my full post with regards to Parker. They do alot differently. The the fretboard, the frets, the exoskeleton, the piezo onboard bridge pickup, the weight, the adjustable tremolo system they do alot differently than the stuff put out by Fender, Gibson and PRS.
