Does anyone have recommendations for power tubes for a Silverface Pro reverb. I don't want NOS. I want new ones but not sure which. I heard Mullards are good. But want to keep the amp as clean as possible. Thanks
Most all of the new tubes are made by a very few (at one time 2) companies. The brand names they use mean nothing relative to their heritage. That said, power tubes are less critical for tone. Try some TAD's.
I've had excellent luck with JJ 6L6's. I use them in my Pro Reverb, one of my Deluxe Reverbs, and - in the past - in a Hot Rod Deville. They do great cleans and I've never had one fail...although in the HRD they would sometimes develop tube rattle but that is more a function of that amp and the proximity of the tubes to the speakers.
For new 6L6 power tubes I like the JJ's and Tung Sol's best. They've both been very reliable for me. If your looking to reduce volume a bit, try the Tung Sol 5881. To me it's the best sounding 5881 around. I use them in my 5E8A and 5E5A and they sound wonderful.
