Let this be a place where we marvel and wonder how jerry type tone and stylings come up in weird or perhaps unusual conbinations of guitars Amps, fx spaces etc.

Remember all the brilliant playing done by brilliant players who have dedicated the time and love to play our favorite songs as best as they can and bring their own voice and take to music and an ethos the rest of the world usually wants to forget exists.
Sometimes they arrived to new places by unconventional means and lit up new hearts and smiles in a new way.

Just did a gig with my Ultra Axe FX. A buddy in a local guitar store scored one for 800CDN. They ask 1,000 now on CL locally. Not often but they do come up.

Played it through a BWG power amp. Purchased for 100 on CL with a used verb pedal in contra.

Into my JBL 2x12 cab. Built by a buddy for 100 and 60 in parts.

JBL D120s had on CL for 350 for the pair. Mint shape. Reconed by a JBL dealer in the 80s.

Pretty much sums up the rig.

The AXE FX patch was simply a twin verb sim. With Vic's IR's. The E120s.

Best Jerry tone I've gotten to date at a gig.

I used my Kingsley Page boost for leeds and no pedals for rythem.

I used the Ultra just as an amp. And used my analog pedals mostly a boss delay and 3 leaf Protron. I'll call it hybrid. Not conventional. Only the JBL cab was the standard must have piece of gear from this forum.

I think now that the Ultra has come down so much in price it is an amazing piece of gear to have. Very versatile. Pair that with a FRFR monitor and you are 90% to having a stadium Jerry rig at 1/4 the weight and 1/4 the price.

I was going the monitor route until I realized it was needed more as a main.

I like the "tone" of this thread,(sorry) because its inclusive of people like me, who have long relished JG tone but haven't had the resources to go the straight replication of his stage rig route.
I think I'll start where my mind, ears and finger tips leave off. There must be another thread to describe playing technique as it applies to tone.
Here goes:
Dunlop Adamas graphite 2mm pick
10-46 D'Addario strings- or bulk, on sale or whatever. I suppose I may try to find some Vincis sometime.
Home built Solid body electric:
DC LP shape, chambered(for weight) Purpleheart core, book matched Ash top and back, triple laminate Ash-Purpleheart-Ash deep neck(deep set, to behind the string through tail) 12" radius, 24 fret, rosewood fret board, jumbo frets, Cow bone nut.
TOM bridge, angled to allow correct intonation with highish action (I'll measure the set up sometime)

Ceramic mag PUs H-S-S B17.21k, M5.48k, N5.07k> 5-way switch> 500k Audio master tone .022u ceramic cap> Scott Walker J201 buffer> OBEL> MXR EF>home built DIST+ w/ Wampler mods> Boss HM2>MXR Phase 100> EHX Memory man>
Back to 25k audio Vol> Scott Walker Stratoblaster> Home built clone of a Demeter Fat control> Digitech RP14- 12ax7 tube multi FX (reverb only)> Beringer Tube Ultra-Q (tone shaping and signal boost)> Traynor YPM-1 SS power amp(200w mono)
Home built Trapezoid, open back, 2x12 cab loaded w/ Kustom Turbo 12s (aluminum dust caps) 16 Ohm in parallel for 8 Ohm load.

This rig sounds as close to JG as I have been to date. It had allowed me to clearly hear myself, and Its really very revealing of sloppy playing and variations of tone as a result of playing technique.
My back up rig is:
A Rondo SX hardtail Strat (TOM/stop bar), maple fret board, jumbo frets, plastic nut
Artec alnico S-S-S PUs>5-way>500k tones 1Mid, 2B&N > home built Tiger style buffer clone (w/high voltage caps)> OBEL> same FX> 25k audio Vol> home built Stratoblaster clone> '82 Fender Blackface 75 head> home built trapezoid, open back 1x12 cab w/ Celestion 8 Ohm driver.
I like the Fender reverb better but the amp tone is not as clean and clear as the SS rig.
The relatively inexpensive (replaceable) Rondo Strat sounds amazingly good. The alnico PUs sound more Strat like and less JG like. None the less its a nice stable setup that stays in tune for days and I like the maple board for pedal steel imitation licks that require smooth sustaining bends/returns.
Of course I've got plenty of other guitar options, home built and factory made, but I've ended up practicing on these 2 mostly to keep me familiar with the feel and to take advantage of the OBEL stability of the FX

Taking this thread a little further
I've been loving my 70s silver face Champ (6.5 watts)driving 2x12!
I'm now looking at the Fender super champ 2x head to be my regular gig amp Its just 2 6v6 output tubes and a 12ax7 preamp tube, for a whopping 15 watts!
There are many great reviews of the tone in general and amp voice models. There are 2 foot switchable channels and a well reviewed digital reverb and other fx, foot switchable as well
It's only $299 new for the head!
There is a 1x10 combo version as well for $380 new
How cool would that be with a JBL d110!

If the any of the amp model voices are a good blackface twin
This might be a good way to scale down the stage volume and still be in the JG tone ballpark
Does anyone have any experience or comments on the Fender Super Champ2x?
