I am relatively new to the whole tape trading world. After reading Blair Jackson's Garcia I decided to heed his advice and buy a copy of deadbase. I go to Deadbase.com and find that the most recent copy which was XI, if I am correct, is no longer in print. No problem I think because I get out of print books all the time. Well I check amazon and ebay and find that if I want a copy of Deadbase XI I will have to pay at least $150 if not $200.

So first off what were these things goin for in 99 when they were printed and why isn't anyone republishing these? Some people are asking $400 for these. Am I missing something? If anyone has a copy that they want to sell for a reasonable price feel free to email me.

I will tell you quite frankly, don't spend your bucks on some beat down copy of DB unless you just have to. The information contained in DB IX is available in so many other places and unless you just have to own a physical copy there are many websites that provide the info contained in those now overpriced books. I dealt with the same thing when I tried to purchase the third volume of the GD Taping Compendium. The first two volumes were readily available but the third volume was damn near unattainable unless you wanted to go to used book sellers on Ebay or Amazon and pay insane prices.The band is not making any scratch off of those publications now so all you are doing by purchasing the books is enriching some booksellers. Check around on this site or just post a question about setlists or whatever information you seek and you will be spared getting robbed. I will gladly point you in the right direction and hopefully save you hundreds of dollars in the process.

Y'know, I tend to agree, up to a point. I have deadbase X in hardcover (someone got it for me as a gift when it came out) and I love having it handy. It's got great lists, and I can carry it to any room and read it. It is an excellent book to leave in the bathroom and flip through while you're leaving a good one and though I would never pay that much, I would recommend buying Deadbase IX or X if you want to have the stuff handier than on computer. Besides, sites, do go down, sometimes for good! You can find IX or X for a lot less and they're just as good as XI. Just my two cents.

I want to get one because sometimes you want to be unplugged. I would rather sit on my deck thumbing through the book then sit in front of my computer. Anyway, does anyone know of a source that is fairly cheap?

John Scott, who I assume did most of the work on Deadbase, has said his stock is running low, and he is out of the self-publishing business for good. It's understandable. I'd guess nearly everyone who wants a copy of Deadbase has one.
