The mid 80's aren't always revered as a better era for the band, and in and of itself I'm not crazy about the OD-1/JBL tone...but in Jerry's hands its like a rocket that nothing can stop
Jerry was a real gunslinger on a lot of shows I see/listen too from 84/85 with the OD-1. On the Chicago blues numbers eg. he just goes 110 mph non-stop. Really jawbreaking stuff that takes a lot of stamina in addition to passion...this isn't legato.

I was at those shows. Funny thing, I don't recall being inspired by much of that tour. It was the height of Jerry's health decline. The highlight for me were Candice's lights during the Other One in New Haven. I thought they pulled out of the slump in summer and really rocked in the fall of 84. The Scarlet Fire Playin UJB from Worcester was a highlight as well as the two Augusta shows that I was lucky to catch. The one and only time I mustered some connections to get on the guest list. Even Phil talked about theses Augusta shows in his biography and word in the parking lot was that someone had talked to Phil and he gave an indication the shows were going to be epic.

I'm going to have to give this show a new listen. Thanks for posting.

I was at these shows, as well. I remember it looked like the balcony was rocking back and forth during 'Bertha>GSET' the night before (4/19). His health may have been declining, but (as far as I remember) he was absolutely ripping on guitar! I still have cassette masters of the Philly run (from the trusty Sony D5)...I'll have to bust 'em out and give 'em a twirl...

For a long time, I didn't spend much time listening to this era but a couple of years ago I decided to dig in and really listen to 1984. This show is just one example of how regardless of his health, Jerry was ripping. You could argue that he's sort of playing above the band a lot of the time, in his own world more than usual during these heavy-use years, but he was playing with such tremendous volume and getting such spectacular tone that I'm among the converted!
