Someone said that you CAN compare the two and I agree. They are both guitarists and they both play lead in most prominent jam bands on the face of this Earth. Compare Jerry to let's say Michael Jackson and you'll get yourself in one of those "uncomparable" conundrums.
But Jerry vs Trey is all legal.

Me, I take Jerry over Trey any day of the week. Jerry's music is more true, more traditional, more open.
In my opinion Jerry and the Dead have not only created the jam scene but they also defined for years and years to come. No matter how much time will pass and no matter how many bands fill the scene they will always be compared to the Dead.
Phish have not defined or re-defined the principles of a jam band, they just elaborated on it.
Its not a question of playing styles or guitar knowledge.

i have never even heard of the other guy. i rest my case.

 Hey Viceroy, try moving out from under that rock of yours, there's a lot of good music you may be missing!

I listen to numerous bands of all styles. All I'm saying is that you are comparing one of the greatest guitarist of all time, with a style of his own, which nobody has sucessfully duplicated, to a "no name". It's not fair to the phish guy. i undertand they are a good band, but give me a break. The guy wouldn't be rated in the top 100.

Viceroy, Trey is rated in the top 100, but regardless - that's one publications opinion (Rolling Stone, fwiw), maybe not your top 100 or his or hers, etc.

And Django & sarraqum, of course you can compare them. I mean hell, they're both human beings, so right there there's a similarity. They both probably woke up and took a dump first thing in the morning too. My point of not being able to compare them was regarding the fact that it is kind of like comparing a red delicious apple to a granny smith apple (or something like that...). Both apples, and both good in their own sense, but it's an opinion and nothing more at some point of the conversation. But again, being on a Dead site as this is, it's a moot point because Jer's going to (deservedly so) get 99.9% of the vote here.

Again, to me, it's kind of like comparing Jim Brown to Barry Sanders or Jim Thorpe to Bo Jackson or even Martin Luther King Jr. to Mother Teresa and trying to say who's better running back/athlete/humanitarian. Who knows?

I do agree though with the folks that say that Jerry just has that special something, that way of plucking your heart strings and bringing you to the point of tears when he plays/sings. Trey never really had that, not that it's a bad thing, because I think Trey had stuff that Jerry couldn't offer either, but I digress. I think part of Jerry's passion in his singing anyways is due to some of the incredible lyrics that Hunter penned for him too. But he just had a compassion for "the song" that I've never found anywhere else that is truly amazing, and we certainly are all lucky to have found it.

Must suck for all those people who haven't discovered the Dead or Jerry, huh?

hey shakedown, rolling stone magazine has a list of the top 100 guitarist of all time, they name garcia number 13, ahead of the likes of carlos santana, jeff beck, and in the same company as keith richards, jimmy page to name a few. They do have Trey rated number 73, behind Joni Mitchell. now i'm no expert and do not agree with the exact order of the list, but if you are comparing the two, it's a one horse race. I do admit i did not think trey would be in the top 100, but i now stand corrected, my bad. please show me any credible list other than your own which shows trey as a better axe man than captain trips.

i hope i didn't come off as arguementive, because that's not what this is about. my opinion is of no more value than anyones. It is all personal opinion. If someone says Joni Mitchell is number 1, god bless them, it's their opinion, and if that's what they feel, that is all that matters. That is the great thing about music. there are millions of different tastes and styles, none being any better than the other.

ronster wrote:Listen to the P&F shows with Trey and Kimock playing guitar with him. While Trey is playing most of the leads, Kimock blows him away as far putting out a lead that just moves you. Trey plays alot notes and you think it must have been good because it sounded kinda difficult but in the end it never takes me any place special. So the question should not be be Trey or Jerry but Steve or Jerry because they are the two guitarst that can bring me to that special place.
Aside from that it appears that people who put Trey right up there or past Jerry don't have a shift key on there keypads.
You give Trey no credit whatsoever. Have you ever listened to harry hood or theme from the bottom. Trey can be moving! It's just that most phish songs arent about soul they're about fun. Jerry was a sonic explorer looking for deeper meaning in life... Phish and Trey not so much. The Dead have more soul but Phish have more fun. As for Kimock yeah he's great, but he's not as good a writer as Trey or Jerry, only an amazing soloist. IMO anyways.

oh and it's "their" keypads

Rolling Stone is a crock of shit. They should have NO say on guitarists, JONNY RAMONE GOT OVER TREY. Maybe on a list of most INFLUENTIAL, ramones better than trey but their list is "best" so... Rolling Stone should have no credible say in anything, goddamn my chemical romance lovers

Hahaha, Rolling Stone magazine should not be considered as a viable enough evidence in this discussion/argument whatever you want to call it.
In theory this thread is going absolutely nowhere because neither side is going to concede.....wait, how many sides are here? One?
But regardless, Trey does not deserve to be called a nobody. He may be 73rd in the list of best guitarists but he is higher on that list than all of us combined over and over and over.....

Oh and shakedown, I never said Trey can't be compared to Jerry, in fact I said quite the opposite.

No dude, I know you didn't, that's not what I was saying.....I was responding to the fact that you said you CAN compare them. I agree, but my previous post before that one stated that you CAN'T compare them due to the reasons I mentioned above. Just a little miscommunication, that's all. :-? It's all good.

But Viceroy, I never said Trey was a better axe-man than the Jer-meister. Just that they are equally good in their own right. But I agree, Rolling Stone is certainly not the be-all-end-all in terms of forming opinions regarding the "best of". Personally, JG would be ranked higher than 13 in my book, but I don't think I can have a true #1, because there are people that do different things for me personally, as a listener, and folks who have different styles can't be compared up against others as a "who's better" because it's just different. My top guitar players of all time (Weir, Hendrix, Zappa, Santana, Page, Knopfler, Clapton, to name a few) all get lumped into one giant yacht, with Jerry & Trey the Captain & First-Mate, I guess, because they are my favorite 2.

But yeah, this thread is going to go nowhere fast for sure.

how about we just say jerry wins and move on to round 2

jerry vs clapton, duane allman or hendrix

my votes with the phat man for all 3

 #19857  by sarraqum

I'd pick Jerry over any guitarist in any discussion simply because he did what he did for 30 odd years and music he made was more than just music, it was raw emotions rather than anything else. The man literally died on stage giving music to the masses. If thats not reason enough to pick him as a number one than I don't know what is. Then again, this is just my opinion and I don't force it on anyone.

I only used Rolling Stone as a reference because my google search had them as the most popular, and seemingly most credible. I never really liked them because they never through all their years ever gave much respect to Garcia and the Dead., but they are a non-deadhead view of it all. I certainly cannot fiqure out how they rank Pete Townshend #50. now there's no respect. The other googled sites failed to memtion Trey in their top 100, and another had him at 143. Like I said it is only one man's opinion.I also am not calling Trey a nobody. That band has to be great to get to where they are, I know alot about Phish, respect what they have done and all that, but I just said I never even knew the guy's name, nor cared to until i read this thread. I read the thread to find out who Trey was. forgive me for my ignorance there. That being said, i will make an effort to hear some more Phish.
