Jason, I knew you would have the info.

Possibly my favorite era of Jerry tone is the era you speak of, I just always assumed it was either the 3 pickup TB, or if it was the 2 pickup version he played it from the neck pickup except for a few rare forays into the bridge. Like when he would turn on the drive pedal for a Dancin' solo before he started using the Mutron. I have a bunch of two pickup guitars and for the most part, they all achieve that same sound from the middle position (whether it is out of phase, or whatever I'm not positive) but they all have the same sound. BB King, MIke Bloomfiled, Dickey Betts, etc. That sound. I just never hear that from Jerry. Is that something to do with the Bean itself, wiring, etc?

Am I making any sense at all? I lost myself at "out of phase".

Paramount Theater from June 3rd, '76 is definitely one of my top 1 shows of all time. I'm listening to Jerry all over and to me it sounds like neck pickup all night. Have I been wrong all this time?

At about the 7:00 mark into Crazy Fingers, Jerry takes the out jam into Wharf Rat, besides being a ridiculous jam, I just love his bell tone there. Neck? Perhaps middle?

I just never hear that twangy vibe from Jerry that comes with that middle position like I hear with BB, Jimmy Page, Bloomfield, Albert Collins, Roy Buchanan, Danny Gatton, etc.

I've seen bits of that before, fantastic stuff. Mickey's got mad stylo.

Take the Dancin' for example, to me it sounds like neck pickup for the most part, then some bridge pickup. I do see it looks like the selector is in the middle, but it looks like it is in teh same spot the whole tune and clearly he isn't keeping it in one spot.

WHen I think middle pickup, whether it be a tele or a LP or an SG< they all have that sound, like Mike Bloomfield's intro solo on Stop from Super Sessions with AL Kooper et al. Or I think BB King, or Dickey, or Cornell Dupree at the top of Memphis Soul Stew. They all have the same sound.

If indeed Jerry is playing the middle position, why is his tone so far away from that sound? I'm baffled. And terribly vexed.

Such a fun video....Yeah, looks like Jerry is in all 3 pickup selector positions at different points....

My favorite guitar. Those Bean pups are hot, hot, hot....make any front end clip fairly easily. Sounds fantastic through that Boogie Mark I Preamp....

crazy9.5 - it might be an in phase/out of phase issue - though probably not.

Thanks for the advice guys it helped tremendously! While I still have the stock humbuckers on the les paul, does anyone know what tone settings/ amp settings/ pedals Dickey Betts used? I've tried to find info about this online before, but cant ever find anything. Thanks guys.

I know he used those 100 watt Marshalls - I have an 80s JCM100 and it does a pretty good impersonation with my LP

I like to have the warm jazz thin hollow tone every once in a while. How do u guys feel about a Gibson Classic 57' humbucker on the bridge and a high output pickup (maybe a p90?) in the bridge for a jerryesq tone? Any suggestions for a bridge pickup? Thanks guys, much love

I've got a RI '72 Tele Thinline that I dropped the Gibson '57 classics into. They are great sounding pickups. Not sure if it is a great idea to have two different output pickups in there as when you went for the middle position, my guess is it would favor the higher output pickup, hence not get that middle pickup sound as it was designed to be.

There are lots of guys here on this forum with far superior knowledge of electronics than I, but I can say the '57 classics are very nice sounding pickups. I've toyed with the idea of putting the Pearly Gates in there but I guess I love the sound of the Classics enough not to tinker with it.

With the tone knob rolled down a bit, I get great jazz tones from that guitar. And I wouldn't worry about the output of the pickup for the bridge, it is plenty IMO.
