In my opinion there really isc no more originality left in this world anymore especially in the music world. I mean everything that's been there to find has been found if you know what I mean. A guitar has 22-24 frets and six strings that's roughly 132 notes how many diffrent ways can you string them together before they start copying someone else's? Also I don't see anyone slamming Derek Trucks, i mean for crying out loud he's a fuckin' Duane Allman rip- off. And I'm sure most of you are Jerry or Bobby rip-offs, hell I am. So like Jesus said: "He that is without sin amoung you, let him cast the first stone." Thank you and goodnight.

hes 12

does it matter if he is copeying something note for note? I see my friends learn things like that all the time. give him time and he'll start being more original. im 15 and not nearly that good, my bros 1 and hes not nearly that good. for a 12 year old to even be mimicing some1 elses playing with that amount of skill is still incredible

why does his age have to be an issue, obviously he considers himself an artist if he's up on a giant stage with a backing band, and it's just a bit of criticism, is he really gonna read this forum and be devastated? mozart wrote spectacularly at young ages and it seems to me that these "child prodigy" news bits are all derived from his legacy, but none of the "prodigys" are original like he was so why waste time trying to make them seem like they are. you wouldnt stand up for a 40 year old who ripped off srv and had played guitar for however many years this kid has, they're the same age in years playing guitar, doesnt that make them equals? yes, he's very good, i'm pretty jealous i cant do that, but if i'm not allowed to criticize art because the artist is "too young" to handle criticism you're killing art because if noone can have a deriding opinion of a young person then being a young copycat becomes the industry standard and what we get in music is old music repackaged by kids aka KIDS BOP.

sorry i realize that sounded a little harsh but i get upset when i see that disneys high school musical sells more than real artists. kids who just do as their told defeating artists with purpose and vision in record sales just because they're younger. i dunno the hannah montana outselling the white stripes thing, i'm just pretty frustrated at the whole issue is all

i agree with the killing art thing
but i think its judt un just. who knows mabey he can do more then things note for note, its one video. i could be completley rong and all he does is mimic other guitarist. im just saying give the guy a chance b4 u critique him so hard about song choice and how he does it

He sure can play amazing and copy at the perfection SRV, he may be a great musician in future, but anyway, if he continues playing like that i don't think he is gonna get anyway, because, artist have to be themselves, and not copying, i mean, it's ok to make covers and all that, but you shouldn't play the same thing note by note.

I play a lot the Grateful Dead but I try to make it my way, or at least, try to give a new perspective for the song.

I suppose all the blues players also did that, they didn't just "copied" from others, every one made that song unique, the same for the GD covers.

And I think if you start to think of great covers, they aren't the same as the original.

That kid is making an exact and a completely not original cover, maybe for now, maybe he will get better and he's going to be the best of all guitarrists in the world and a great compositor and original musician, but not for now.

How is it any different from a classical violinists doing one of Beethoven's works?. Give the kid a break(Really, what 12 year old is gonna sing with soul other than a member of the Mormon tabernacle boys choir). Ya keep the blues and Jazz alive by playing it and talking about it and passing it on. The minute you believe that everything in Blues, rock, Jazz or whatever has all been done then the art form truly is dead, I don't believe it for a second. It might go through a lull from time to time but not Dead. Usually when people start thinking that, someone special comes along and blows everyone away. Personally I'm wating for another punk revival...real punk, not that Green day Blink 182 bullshit.(even though I secretly dig Green Day...shhh!). Neil Young needs another tune on par with "Rockin' in the Free World", now that would put a smile on my face. Now I'm ramblin'.

you didnt counter any of my points you just said the same thing you've said all along, yeah classic works whatever i just dont think nostalgia acts are anything to hype. thats just imo, you have your opinion about hyping cover groups and thats fine

I mean, listen to early Stevie Ray closely and you'll find he's copying old Albert King Riffs.

Also, how about DSO? They're the gods of ripoffs, but hell, I love 'em.

All this debate just because some young kid plays the guitar quite well.

If the guy was 30 nothing would be said!

amen to that. some of my friends listen to that stuff. my ex used to talk about high school musical non stop. my friend in middle skool loves hannah montanna, so does my 13 yo cuz. ive tried to get them to listen to some dead and stuff, and one friend i got hooked on ween, but that was about it. the rest all stuck with that stuff. its for that reasons, im like the only guy at my skool whos never seen high school music and damn proud of it

as for the kid, some ppl take time to find their own creativeness, ive been playing 13 months and alot of the things r do are diffrent from the originals, like i mix it up a least a lil bit. but some ppl, like my bro whos been playing a year more than me and is pretty good in my opinion still plays everything exactley how its played on studio album versions. i mean the kid prollys ben playing longer than me and my bro, but i say give him time, hell find his own as an artist, and if he doesnt, he wont make it as an artist.

 white stripes rock, hannah montana is crap compared!

I like Montana, spent some time there a few years ago. I never met Hannah though.
