The thing that Rock did that got peoples backs up was some of the (clearly) fictional conversations he made up at certain points in the book. I myself don't have a big problem with that since it's only empathizing a point that helps flesh out the story and make it more readable. He also got some of the dates wrong which is a big no no in deadhead land

Exaggerated like most authors do.
Mistakes are mistakes and they happen.
Some "misquotes" are the speaker's failed memory.
Other "misquotes" are the listener's failed memory.
Mostly, he told told tales outta school and people didn't like that.

yeah man, hanging out with freaks all the time and having a reputation as large as his... must have been pretty wierd at times. but, the role of Jerry Garcia obviously had the potential to be all kinds of fun as well. Jerry was definitley a pleasure-seeker. of course you can't have one without the other. the experience of having an ultimate pleasure comes along with the potential to experience the polar opposite to the same degree. that is to say, the good comes with the bad.

We (my friends and I) used to love to be close to him like he was some kind of god. And we always somehow in the back of our minds wished we were him. The best drugs, fans, money and an incredible guitar talent.
I can tell you this knowing what I know now, I would not have traded places with him. (excluding the obvious fact he is dead)

i totally agree with you there. i would not have been able to handle trading places with Jerry. he had a whole legion of people looking up to him, as well as trying to run a business without being a corporate prick in this corporate world. no i would not trade my life for jerry's but i feel what he did, nobody else could handle as well as he did. and for that i consider him a role model of sorts, a really cool dude from who we could all stand to learn a little bit... or a whole lot.

I cant agree with that. He was a junkie, led a trouble life and battled with addiction for many many years until ultimately it shortened his life.
Maybe in the beginning and for a long while the drugs worked for him but at some point he started working for the drugs.
Many others could handle being in a big band, run a business, keep a cool persona without ruining thier lives with drugs. Although I would trade segments of my life for his, in general he was very very troubled for decades.
Now dont get me wrong, I love the guy more than any other musician, he is one of my guitar heros but not a lifestyle role model hero.

I've never had a problem seperating the music from the person. I guess some people link the two together, generally singers/guitarists in rock bands aren't going to make good lifestyle role models. Wisdom tells us that many of our idols let us down in the end and are not as good as we thought.
