I have thought about this a few times. The Dead have wrote many songs that were never recorded on the studio album. I'm talking about songs under The Dead name and not "Dead" songs on individual studio albums. Bobs "Ace" album was essentially a Dead Disc with all Bob material, as we all know. You get songs like Sugaree, The Wheel, etc. from some Garcia albums. But, I don not believe that songs like Jack Straw, He's Gone, Bertha, Wharf Rat, Tenessee Jed, Brown Eyed Women were ever recorded on a studio album, but are all original Dead material. Interesting. Just a thought I could only bring up on Rukind.

The Dead did have that self titled album, but the cuts are live I do believe.

Yeah, I've thought about that before. I know at least with Bertha and Wharf Rat the closest they ever came to album release was on the Skull and Roses live release. I always wondered why there were never any studio releases. Interesting.

Well to me the songs you mentioned were released not in studio but close enough. Between "skullfuck" and "Europe 72'" I believe all the aforementioned are in there plus they are exceptionally good quality. So i think thats the reason they didnt bother ya know? Just like Ramble on Rose. NEver got a studio cut yet the Europe 72 version was good enough. Thats my opinion

On a related note, does anyone know where the Skullfuck nickname came from? I think I used to know, but can't for the life of me remember.

there was talk of this on another thread, i think.

hunter had wanted to release a studio album in 71 or 72, featuring many of the songs on skull & roses, and E72, called Rambling Roses.

I think the versions presented on those live albums were better than any sutdio version could be, though.

I saw an album in my record store under Jerry Garcias name, it was called "Hooteroll?"

I looked at the back, it says it came out in 1970, and none of the songs look familiar exept for one titled "Da Bird Song"

As far as I know, it was a Duo of Garcia on guitar, and another guy on keyboards. I cant remember the other guys name, though. But on the back, it shows a picture of JG sharing a joint with him.

Apparently it's super rare, because this store, Love Garden, marks all the really rare records with a special sticker saying "you better put some use to this if you buy it, or else"

anyone know anything about it?

Those songs appeared on Garcia's debut solo album Garcia in 72, he played everything on the album except drums which Billy K played, Hunter wrote the words and that was it. No one else was involved in the playing/writing process.

Jerry's third solo album Reflections is half his Band at the time and half dead. He's backed by the Dead on Might As Well, Catfish John, It Must Have Been The Roses, Comes A Time and They Love Eacher. His Band back him on the rest - They Love Each Other, Tore Up Over You, Mission In The Rain and I'll Take A Melody.

Pretty much a heavy weather jazz album, some very fine moments indeed. Garcia's first solo work (unless you count Zabriskie Point and his Airplane assistance and his numerous solo live gigs at verious jam sessions from late 67 onwards), it's actually called Da Birg Song and has no relation to Jerry's Bird Song. The live albums of the Wales/Garcia combo are worth getting too, since it was the basis of Garcia forming his own band(he got in Merl after Wales quit) and he also met John Kahn while playing with Wales.
