I got all the hardware in trade for a snake I never used so I'm not 100% sure what my final choice was but I'm thinking I got gold Schaller's. The headstock is John's (the builder's) design it's a pretty standard 3+3 type - I was in a hurry to take the picture and didn't get the cell phone cam aimed well. There's no overlay on the headstock - it was how it came from Soulmate. I didn't want to do much other than get this one assembled as after years of parts sitting around I was ordered "no more new toys till you get those parts put to use!" Quitting the job and going back to grad school put a hurtin' on finances too so I didn't want to get too cute.

I've got a cool spalted pecan body and a old Gretsch thru-neck kit sitting around too ...

It's not procrastination...you have allowed the wood for this build to fully acclimate...and now is the proper time to begin construction. well done.

Well, the thru-neck is finished and hardening for a couple more weeks before getting wired up. I did get my '79 Strat wired up today. It was originally black and a former owner stripped it and did a horrible clear finish on the ash body. The electronics were just as bad - it came with 3 stacked humbuckers that sounded like shit. I got 2 gold Lace Sensors for free from a friend but they weren't much better. It had been sitting for at least 5 years with not even a new set of strings. My wife started an art project using old guitars so she asked if she could paint it. I said sure if I can get new pickups and hardware for it. I got 3 Duncan APS-1 pickups, she painted it, I wired it up today. It sounds great, it was always pretty loud and resonant unplugged. Now it sounds like a real Strat again and looks pretty darn cool.


This color in this pic is kinda washed out - it's a lot brighter that this.

I just did a low volume test through the SMS Classic i--> Boogie Mark III EFX Ret --> 2x12 cab and it's gonna be a great Aligator guitar. Woot!!

Getting closer - it took a while to figure out the finish issues with the spalted maple. Finish is hardening for another week and a half, then buffed out and wired up and should be ready to go on the 30th the date of my next gig!

. I ended up going to a bent frame / connector stop (as I thought given the opportunity to better exercise the option to "lock" each component of the body). It was not nearly as bad, cut off the hands of the neck, because I thought it would be (I used a router). But despite this, you get the angle I could get with the available stock for the neck, I'll have to fight a small sink. I have not gotten back yet, but soon ... It will be really close.
