8 is quite nice...some acoustic songs to start it off then a great electric set....the It's a Mans World is AMAZING!

I highly recommend 18. It's got similar songs to 15 but they are worth having. Jerry's playing is on point through all 3 discs. Both the 2nd and 3rd CD's are flawless and highlights off the 1st is Bertha, Brown-eyed women, looks like rain, and dupreee's...phenomenal versions.

12 is my other favorite with a nice jam preceeding the China Cat. Jam on the 3rd cd gives you your money's worth, followed by a wonderful U.S. blues. Ship of Fools should also be mentioned as a reason for purchase.

Didn't mean to sound like an advertisement, but I get excited over these two picks.

I don't own any DP's, but I have several of the shows that were the sources. DP14 (11/30&12/2/73) has been one of my favorites since it came out.

Why don't people include the dates when talking about DP's?

i agree with Trystine. 12 (6/74) and 18 (2/78) are high on my list.

i also like 13 (5/81),
36 (9/72),
23 (9/72),
3 (5/77),
25 (5/78)

in no real particular order. i'm sure you'll get differing opinions on the relative merit of just about each pick.

#12, #18, #26. "The Other One" on DP18 will make your hair stand on end then singe it off. A must.

That's no lie. The other one on 18 really gets your blood pumping. It's a roller coaster ride between verses. When the band finally hits the peak, the music kinda pauses there for a second and some guy screams like he really is on a roller coaster (exactly how I would've if I was there). The energy continues through the second verse, then you finally get to catch your breath.

I will throw in a recommendation for Dick's Picks 20, but for different reasons.

The first show was my good concert buddy John's first show and the second was my second show. We didn't know each other at time and it also turns out we were both at Summer's End Concert at Raceway Park, NJ the next year in 1977. We met in 1982. Did many shows after that and we're still hanging around together, still going to shows.

Perhaps of more interest was in the late 1980's and 1990's our dear departed friend, Dave (a professional photographer) had gotten into the Dead late but was a rabid member of the tape tree community. It was always kinda weird to have him come into the pool hall with a handful of tapes and put one on and you are thinking, "Hey, that sounds familiar". You go check it out in Deadbase and it is a show you had been to like 10 years before. Very cool!

Now the part noone will believe, but true nonetheless. He corresponded via snail mail w/ Dick Latvala numerous times, I've seen the letters. We know he suggested these shows (because he thought they were good and he knew we were there :-) Thank you, David) for a Dick's Picks release. We are pretty confident it was his suggestion that got them included in Dick's Picks 20. What a kick it was when DP 20 came out!

I think the Raceway Park show is on a DP also. I am not good with concert dates as so many other Deadheads are or DP numbers.

We own all the Dick's Picks 1 thru 36. 36 is the most recent,I believe. They are all good.

FWIW.

Peace, Dave

whats funny is I posted the exact same post on archive.org and Im getting most of the same responses: DP 12 and 18 are the shit

I truly believe DP2 is the best single disc in the whole bunch...many magic moments in that one. 1,3, 28, 35,36 get honorable mention too.

I agree, dp2 might be the single most amazing set ever

anyway I just ordered 12 and 18 from gdstore.com

My vote for 15 as well, sept 77. It was my better halfs first show. She had the time of her life. Lots of mud, I think.
and Marshall Tucker and New Riders, well not on the DP
