I have tried to record some samples of my Jerrypaul and I haven't had much luck. Using Amplitude, I have an amp with a line out then use an 1/8" cord to connect the amp headphone JK to the computer through the mic input. The problem is you cant hear what you are playing (once you plug in a line the speaker goes dead) until you record it, stop it, rewind it and then play it back through the computer that has a speaker system attached. This makes getting an handle on my sound a real job. With limited gear, what is the best way to record music on a computer? once you have it recorded what kind of files do you want to convert it as to share on this place? Thanks, I just need a little help here....

One problem is that you are using the DA/AD converter in your computer which is about a $1 DA/AD converter. Getting some inexpensive converter would be probably what you need - they'll have a headphone out so you can hear what you're recording too. Not sure what a good cheap one is these days but Presonus used to make reasonable ones. Even if you could get your sound card to send the signal back out of the headphone jack it won't give you a very good recording.

One other possibility without spending money is if you have a camcorder usually have decent DA/AD converters you could leave the lens cap on. The you can export only the audio file out of the Windows Video editor if you are using a PC or iMovie if you are using a Mac.

This is what I use: M-Audio Black Box. Discontinued, super cheap, packaged with Ableton software (although Audacity [open-source, free, Garage Band for Windows] is just as good).

if the program would let you monitor the line in while it records, this would work ideal, but everything is silent, I can't tell if the tone is correct or how i sound until after I record everything.

Maybe slightly off topic but my band and I use a Tascam DR-7 portable recorder. After we record I transfer it to the computer and then can burn it from there. It also will play back on the device when I hook it up to the PA. I love this thing. It will record excellently in a small bar concert venue and is versatile. Once you figure out the levels you want just push record.
