I unboxed my (new to me) Boss OD-2r today and I was really excited. Over the last year and a half or so, I had convinced myself that that was the final piece to the FX puzzle. I had been using, and I've mentioned this here a time or twos, a '81 MXR Distortion+. The MXR is a great box, no question about it, but I had convinced myself that the quintessential over driven Garcia tone I was after (in a nutshell the In the Dark tone) was in the Boss box.

Here was the shocker, the Boss and the MXR are almost identical in tone. Sure they aren't carbon copies of one another but they sound really similar to one another. Of course this is just a "at first glance" comparison I need spend some more time getting to know the Boss unit but I did A/B them for about 90 minutes today in my GCX rig and still I'm really surprised.

I have tested hundreds of OD's and Dist pedals and I agree a lot sound the same when you A/B them, especially at lower volumes. What I usually look for is what makes them different and if that's something I could use or am looking for. I like the OD-r2, its a classic OD.
