I believe early 70s versions do have the wah wah, i know he transitioned away from the vox and/or colour sound wah right around the hiatus....not sure what he employed after that. Phase 100 can get pretty watery on some settings...

Wha wha wha whawawawawawawaw... ( played on a trumpet, trombone or tuba)

The hardest part for me is the segue back to the tune.

Yes, I want to say to around late 83-85 but I've not researched in detail.

That sounds about right...sometime in there on GSET he transitioned to the Mutron. I think GSET would be the song to research the fact by because there were Playin's where he wouldn't touch the wah at all even though it was still available, but EVERY 80's GSET had either the Wah or Mutron on it.(of course someone will pull a single one out that is clean just to prove me wrong :-)

I think it is fairly easy to distinguish between Mutron and the Wah though.

Love the uber-clean Strat tones on Black Throated

PITB from ACE
I dig Jerrys riff at the end of the verse ; easier than the cooler 80's pre-bend release sounding riff.
