So a thought about recording, Is ADAT dead? you can find these cheap and in like new condition. Is it worth it? Does anybody have one? Which model is the best? Or is there a thought on newer technology that is the same quality and as cheap? I am a the camp of being able to touch it, turn it, or push buttons so Im not looking at computer recording just something good quality for small bands say 16 tracks. Mainly for original work demos and such. THANKS

My buddy's studio used Alesis ADATs . . . that was before technology changed and all the recording studios began to disappear

Our drummer has a Zoom recorder, I have yet to mess with it, download music from it, or even touch it, other than moving it out of the way, I think it can be set up through a mixer, we use it mainly as an AUD source to listen for our mistakes and record demo's. It records to a SD disk, for easy downloading to your PC, I believe. Everything can be remastered after the fact. I would think the new technology today is a healthy step forward, but the older stuff still works fine too if that is something preferred.

ADAT's are nice, and they're pretty cheap these days. The only thing is you need to use special tape. I think it's called S-VHS and they're a bit pricey (maybe 8 bucks a tape in the mid 90s). They might need to be special ordered and I think one tape can do 8 tracks. I'm not sure how much time you'd get out of one tape but I believe when we did a 70 minute CD we used a lot of tapes.

All our recordings are now from a 32 track Alesis digital hard drive recorder. They're a lot more money but they need no tape, can hold a LOT of music (32 hours or more I believe) and can be easily used at gigs.

Thanks, I think Im going to get 2 ADATs LX20s, the tape can be orderd by the dozen for 30 bucks or so, at this point Im not sure how much I would even use but it might be my summer project. Im looking at a Mackie SR16vlz and using the couple of rack pieces left over from the old days. Keep'n it simple but going to try to get some tracks down. I figure after the Summer concert season is over, I will be inspired to write again. Hope is the word.
