i know there are plenty of guys on here with kick ass setups and stuff, that are nailing that tone we all love. what are some of the budget rigs out there that are getting that tone, or in the ballpark of that tone? i am one of those guys that doesn't have a ton of cash and has that budget rig that i think gets close to that tone. i am slowly upgrading piece by piece (c'mon tax return, get here already)!

I think one of the first things I did was throw a Super II in the middle position. I was noticeably closer. I caught a steal on eBay and paid something like $30-40 for it. I think they go for about $90 or so normally. But that should be a big step in the right direction

i thought of that. i was hoping to start with the amp, i feel like i get i get a nice little quacky, crunch to it. ala jerry and merl days. Think well-matched, Harder they come. was that a boogie?

I'd start with a Fender amp, or a Mark series Boogie. Also ditch the Boss Fuzz and AW-3(that one is really awful, esp if you have a Q)

Anyone know what guitar Garcia used on those Jerry and Merle Keystone albums?
Man he was really into bending the strings on some of those songs.

my thinking exactly. fuzz and wah have been out of the chain for a while. sometimes i throw the aw-3 for space stuff but very rarely use it. bought the stuff a while ago. ahhh if i knew then, what i know now type of thing. oh yeah dd-3 is in the chain, i like it. lookin towards a screamer next. good idea?
