I hang on the F to G chords. Listen to the album for a simplified riff when Phil plays the F note at the eigth fret and ends the riff with what sounds like a hammer-on* from F over C at the tenth fret to the G over D at the twelth fret and back to the F note at the eighth fret for the one. As the song evolves in live performance Phil expanded/improvised around this theme but it still centers around the F to G.

I play it a little bit differently, but similar. I hang on the F on the 13th fret of the E string, and for the upper chords I play G-B double stops on the D and G strings, sliding down to F-A double stops. It was a struggle to get the muting and balance down for it to sound right, especially with a pick, but I think that's what he's playing...

The only difference between my version and G-Dad's is that he plays the 5th of the G and F chords and I play the 3rd. It's likely that Phil changed from his way to mine when he went from four to six strings - I'll have to investigate that.

Nope, after much listening, Rusty The Scoob is right.
I'm learning the whole album to play with Dave Hebert next weekend.
What interesting about Phil's part is the turn around at the end of the 1st verse line. On the album he plays F C A D but later it sounds like he goes to F E B A.

I haven't had a chance to go back and really check but I think he plays it your way in the 6-string era and my way in the 4 string era. Shame on me for only owning 4s and 5s but I'll get a modded Carvin someday or pony up for a nice Q6.
Those turnarounds gave me absolute fits until I realized - he's changing it literally every time! Not just from version to version but between each verse as well, he picks some other way to play it that makes harmonic sense, generally choosing notes from the F major pentatonic, I think. If you can come up with about 5 different variations that sound good and make sense, that should do the trick.

We get to hang out a fair amount, as Colorado is home base for him and his band often plays one room at Quixote's while we play the other.

I also get to play with Rob Eaton Sr. and Jr. quite a bit. I had a great time with Jr. this weekend at State Bridge with Arthur Lee Land also in the band. Arthur is a terrific guitar player who also plays in Great American Taxi. It was great because Arthur and Rob Jr. can both play the hell out of the Bobby and the Jerry parts. And they both have huge ears and an excellent sense of time and groove. It was a dream for me.
Interestingly, I never play my 6 any more at all! The only time I play it is on non-GD gigs. Otherwise, it's always the Starfire.
Hmmm, for all these years I have been playing the double stops as E-G 14th and 12th frets on the D and G string sliding down to the D-F 12th and 10th frets.
The D and G sliding to the C-F works and I had to go back and check...I definitely hear E and D underneath the G and F on the those double stops. Thoughts?

Was listening to some '77 versions yesterday though and I swear I kept hearing the movement done by as F-C/A-C.
