...it would have such an audible impact on tone. I have screwed around with GuitarCenter cables to Monster cables and things in between. I've thrown an outboard Stratoblaster into the mix to try to preserve some kind of tone. And I still struggled with the fact that nothing I did could conserve the crisp, clean sound of plugging straight into my amp with something like a 3' cable -- everything seemed like a wet blanket was draped over my speaker and it drove me crazy. I like to have at least about 10-15' of length so I can move around a bit and the "tone suck" was driving me crazy.
Enter the 15' Elixir cable I scored on Ebay (less than $50 w/ shipping). Freaked me out to spend this much on a cable, but I have to say I am pretty damn impressed. I compared it with my 21' Monster P-500 (which cost me almost $30 itself), and there is NO comparison. I'm talking night and day, which surprised the hell out of me. Even my wife could hear the difference and she it totally clueless about all things musical.
Maybe it should have been obvious to me all along that all I needed was a very good cable to keep the mids and highs crispy and balanced? In any event, I am definitely pleased with the money spent. There are some comparisons on YouTube and even though they are mostly marketing material from the company, the differences shown are in line with my experience.
