I did a quick project to give myself a cheapo backup bass, plus hopefully nail that 90's Modulus Phil tone. I'm pretty happy with how it came out, with maybe only a little more knob tweaking needed.
Ingredients:
One ESP B255 - neck through 5 string, made in Indonesia, with Photo-Flame finish. $225 shipped.

Two EMG DC40 soapbars. One from Ebay, one miracled by a kind bass player in Chicago. Around $90 for the one that wasn't free.
One EMG BQS system - 3 band EQ with sweepable mids and selectable high frequency - if you adjust two dip switches on the board itself.
Ken Smith Slick Rounds. Same strings Phil used on his Moduluses... still does for all I know. They feel like flats but sound brighter, almost like rounds.
Sound is pretty good... only used it live on four tunes so far. Not half bad! Let me know what you think.
