hey now.. if this gets moved to jack straw discussion i can understand..
but jack straw... 1974, right??????? no question about it.. despite some really messed up tapes.... right? 7/31 or 9/18 or 10/2
right >>>> 1977 was NOT better, was it?
like all of may and june...
and definately years of another ilk: not where, on april 14 1982, bob says that certain members or the rhthym section didn't make it here on time..
i mean, there's no contest, right?

i think 72-74 really capture the imagery and cinematic feeling of the song, just because they sounded like a psychadelic cowboy band back then.

but 77-78 are on top as far as energy. some of my favorite garcia lead lines come from these era jack straws

thats probably the hardest and answer question ive ever heard on rukind. wow 74 or 78 jack straws, 72-74 was prime dead in my opinion then they started smokin again in early 77- closing of winterland, and after that its hard to find a show that over impressed me. i would say 74 strictyl because like caspor said, the song itself just fits the band itself so well, but then again those crazy repeating licks jerry was rippin in 78 are hard to beat. i think bob took the same approach to this song( or close to it) between 74 and 78, so really it comes down to what style of garcia you like... the upside out inside down psychedelic licks or crazy fast energetic licks... i go with 74

For a really fast version with a blistering jam check out 8/30/1980 (first set closer). Can't blame it on coke either because that was in heavy use in the 70's as well.
