I admit, I am not the most technically savvy person, but when I practice I use a tapedeck, and headphones connected to my small Peavy bass practice amp and the stereo receiver with a "Y" cable. It's getting rather old rewinding to practice and figure out riffs all the time, and the sound quality is in mono (YEECH!!).

There has got to be something on the market that plays mp3s and or cds, can loop selected sections of a song, control pitch if needed, and that I can hear my bass and the recording at the same time with headphones on so I do not disturb the family with late at night practicing.

Am I missing something??

Thanks for the links jackr and NashvilleMike. Yes, this gizmo is what I had in mind for a practice aid. I'll see if GC or Sam Ash has one I can try out and test it for sound quality. It works for guitars but does it also work for bass frequencies? Hmmmm.

Check out the Tascam MP-GT1, my son's guitar teacher uses this along with software from http://seventhstring.com.

The Tascam slows down recordings yet keeps them in the same pitch/key, loops, stores mp3s, and is used w/headphones.

NI Guitar Rig! You just need a USB or midi interface. I have an M-Audio Black Box that is self-contained as a practice device or recording interface (with Ableton, Pro Tools, Garage Band, Audacity, whatever you may have access to). It is also a Pass-Thru device for use with apps such as Guitar Rig. Guitar Rig for purchase is expensive... but they have a non-expiring demo that times out after 30 min. Just restart it. Has a tape deck and plays MP3. Can record. Loop. Everything you requested. There is also a "light" version that is free but has limited amp and effect models.

The Black Box is nice because it has Audio out and headphone jack... I have desktop near field monitors for louder playing and headphones for those quiet times when the kids are in bed (sounds like your situation).

Black box is old and discontinued and can be had on eBay probably for under $50. There are other USB interface options some more, some less. Stay away from 1.1 interfaces... high latency = bad for PC-based modellers. Of course if you have access to or want the fastest connection...1394 (Firewire) is the way to go.

Let me know if you have any questions about it. I have used GR and BB for a few years and they are fun. Not perfect by any means and not the 100% replacement for analog... but for digital models they really aren't bad.

I sometimes use a program for Mac called Amazing Slow Downer (http://www.ronimusic.com/) which allows you to slow down music without changing pitch, loop and a bunch more. It's relatively cheap and works great. There's also a windows version. Here's their description of what it does:

"Change the speed of the music - from 20% (one fifth speed) to 200% (double speed) without changing the pitch.

Wrong key? Change the pitch in semi-tones - at full or changed speed.

Out of tune? Adjust the pitch in cents (100ths of a semi-tone) to suit your instrument.

Real-time processing - all described above is done in real-time - just insert the CD and press the play button!

Also slows down MP3, Wave, Windows Media Audio, Ogg, FLAC and AAC/M4A files on your computer in real-time.
Note: M4P files from the iTunes store is now supported.

I tried the equivalent Tascam MP-BT1 gadget for the bass and the sound quality was so poor for the song and the bass input I sent it back. The ease of use and overall design are well designed and thought out. Maybe it is different for guitar but for bass it left much to be desired. Overall it is a great concept but the lousy quality of the sound makes it disappointing and a poor investment.
