I've been playing guitar for quite a while, 8 years about, but took about a 4 year break and didnt touch one. I know the major scales and pentatonic scales. Im not very keen on music theory and how things work, ect. I'm looking for some sort of program, book, ect that I can buy, or for free that will do a very thorough job in teaching me to play. I want to get to the point where I can jam along with music and always know what to play, and just be able to play really well from an overall standpoint. I'd also like to get into composition some to...any suggestions?

The book that really opened / opening doors for me is "Chord-Tone Soloing". It's by Barrett Tagliarino, and is a Hal Leonard book. Great, great stuff

I am not sure where to find the best teachings, but you could search the web for information on the CAGED theory(very nice), and then get your hands on some literature on modes. But really, if you took piano lessons and applied that to the guitar you'd probably see the light very quickly.
