Hard to Handle, FOTD, great stuff. Seems like Weir was the instigator on the part of the China>Rider transition that actually became the tag line for the intro to rider.

Rhythm guitar is his forte for sure. I am not crazy at all about his slide work either.

While I give him props for trying, I think Bobby may be the worst slide player ever recorded. Sonically, it's right up there with chalk on the blackboard, styrofoam rubbing against other styrofoam and Cher.

Some of his solos from the early 70's are nice, but since then its kind of lost on me. He doesnt play good solos, hes a rythym guy.

Also, having grown up on Duane Allman and the such, I could never really stomach Bob or Jerry's slide playing. Jerry's was serviceable, but Bobby's is awful

I guess when I think of a Bobby solo, you either think of something like the the transition in China>Rider or his little bit in Casey Jones... or, you talk about his slide playing, which could be horrible as a solo to sublime as a rhythm instrument. But stepping out front and taking a solo over a verse or whatever fretting notes... not so much.

Bob's chord solos are nasty, he really rips it up on stuff like FOTD, Rider etc. Seems lately they're doing a lot of duet-type solos, where two people carry the lead simultaneously, especially between Bob and Jeff or during the tour last year, Bob and Warren. I think some of his best guitar work lately was last year at Rothbury (7-4-09) and anyone that loves bob HAS to listen to that show, especially the opening jam, eyes, fotd, the slipknot jam (incredible!!!), shakedown, and rider.

He's does this awesome thing a lot where instead of playing chords he plays almost like a counterpoint line between the bass and lead which is almost like a lead part but is sits just underneath the actual lead and creates motion.

Dig 'em! Gotta keep in mind, he can't solo anything like JG did or he'd seem like a copy cat.

That said, you just put a world of limitation on what he can do - so what he does do I feel he does well.

If you listen to enough shows in the early 70s you'll hear Bobby "riffing away" alot more during the shows and then when his solos came LOOK OUT! HOT!

His slide work was okay, nothing to brag about, but was a nice change-up and compliment to the heavy handed rhythm of JG at times and especially when combined with Brent.

i gotta Chime in here about bobby;s slide playing and playing in general. First of all he played next to the most cocksure impactful lead gutarist ever, he could had simply played low simple repetative chords and gotten layed for 30years of that alone, but he didn't, he almost.... well actually did get fired but stuck around, sometimes people don't see the forrest through the trees and on paper Bobby ain't gettin on any top 100 guitartist lists anytime soon, thats because he was an artist on Garcia and phils canvas, caught between a tiger and a lion, Bob is subbltle and profound all at once, he had the toughest job on that stage, everyone else was sure of where they fit in and what to do, he fell into the x factor portion. I could go on and on but speaking of his slide in particular, I would never compare and contrast and doing that everyone would wither to Duane Alman, listen to 3:13-3:16 and 6:33 in of this althea, also Phils face is priceless at 2:45 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQFeuAbLHro
I thought it was feedback I didn't realize it was Bob's slide until a couple of listens, that sound comes not from his gear, his ear, his whatever guitar, skills, influences or whatever, that comes from his balls and absolutley kicks ass!!! It's just when under a microscope the sum of the parts are not equal to the whole, ill shut-up now sorry for ranting, just wish i was at a show, i think we all wish that.......

I have always liked the Bobby solo in FOTD. Especially Providence 87 because Jerry rips into his hardcore coming out of Bobs.
